I am sooo excited! Through the window you can almost see the framed welded wire screen I built to give the girls good ventilation while finishing everything up. Like a screen door, except I have to put it there every morning when I open the door. Can't wait for the run to be done!

I got the roost painted (with Deckover to match) and installed. I put Mr. Mister up there to see what he would do. Later that day I added the PDZ and built a ramp for him.

The girls are getting bigger, we installed the feeder and waterer. We got a 2 month old rooster and thought he would be the only one using them right now, as he is quite a bit bigger. Again, I was taught by my girls. They quit using the chick feeder/waterer and began using the bigger ones immediately!

I had to move them out of the garage and out of the tote way sooner than I thought I'd have to. My non-experience teaching me, I guess. I just moved their light into the shed with them.

Added the litter box and a shelf for the nest boxes. I have a cat litter container there now, with most of the lid removed, to see if I like the look of it. Another interwebs idea. Not sure about it yet tho. I will probably build some.

Closer up view. Since beginning to use them, I found I need to modify the feeder when my birds gets a little bigger. They tend to pull food out all over. I could be their short stature right now. But I will be adding a cover to the food holes, with half of it sawn out. Like a half-moon shape. I think that will catch the food.

The application of Deckover to the floor begins. I intended on purchased Blackjack, as I read on this forum, but I could not find it. The sales people at the orange store recommended Deckover when I explained what I was trying to do. I really hope I didn't screw up here...time will surely tell.

I scratched my new paint when the hole saw got away from me...nothing a paintbrush can't cover up! The insides I will be covering with hardware cloth. I am not sure how I am going to give it a finished look inside, but I may end up just leaving it as is, once hardware cloth is in place.

My Shed to Coop Convert

I purchased a 6X8 foot garden shed that was used by Ground FedEX to store barrels of oil for their trucks. The shed is insulated and wired with a light and an infrared heater mounted, with a thermostat installed. I added adjustable vent to all four corners of the shed, near the ceiling. I painted the walls with a glossy exterior paint for easier cleaning and Deckover on the floor and a few inches up the wall for strong sealant. As seen in the pictures, there were huge oil spots in the wood floor, which I scrubbed really well. Hopefully there won't be any issue with the Deckover, but time will tell. I use sand on the floor of the coop and created a box under the roost as seen on this site (I first seen it from Thespoiledchicken and her pictures) filled with PDZ to catch the poop when the birds are old enough to roost. I added a 32x24 inch window in the door that opens, installing it backward to open from outside. I have never installed a window before, so I was scared, but it worked!

I am a first time backyard chickener, and have been enjoying creating this for my girls! I started with four 1 week old Buff Orpington's and four 1 week old Light Brahma's. Then I added a 2 month old BO/RIR rooster. Finally, I added two Leghorn's a few days old.

I have yet to add the automatic pop door I ordered from Pullet Shut. And we are preparing to build their Fort Knox run. I just wanted to share!

I am so glad to be a part of such a great community! Thank you all for your help and ideas since I joined in April. You are very knowledgeable and encouraging!
