They share 80 sq. ft of enclosed run space plus a fenced-in chicken yard. I am curious to see if the younger ones will eventually try to move into the bigger coop with the older ones!

No Wayyyyy!!! At age SEVEN weeks, ALL five were crowing. The chance of having five roosters from five eggs is 3%. Does this mean I should immediately go to Vegas or definitely not...?

Fortunately, a local poultry farmer had 300 young hens and wanted all five. Phew. They went off, and I decided I would get new (sexed) chicks after summer travels.

Five new chicks! They were incubated in the Kindergarten classroom, and needed a home at the end of the school year in early June 2015.

Access from fully enclosed run to the 4x4 coop. The hens fly up to the roost which is at about 33" high, then walk up the little ramp.

The big coop doors are mainly for cleaning access. I found that if I leave them wide open during the day, the coop dries out and stays cleaner. Poop dries in the sun, bugs fly out. The coop is 35" from the ground, and the hens fly right up into it from their enclosed yard area. Their "official" access to the coop is via a roost and ramp in a fully enclosed run, that lead to a small chicken door in the coop.

The latest improvement: a paved courtyard. Here you see the big 4x4 coop on the right, where the four adult hens sleep, and the smaller 2x4 coop, where the four pullets and cockerel sleep.
