    09northernchicks Chicken Coop

Which came first the chicken or the coop? In our case the chickens! Our first feathered friends arrived May 1rst. They are, from what I understand, called a Golden Comet. The father was a Rhode Island Red and the mother a Barred Rock. We went to pick them up on Chick Day at our local feed...

    Blood loss, egg bound?

Just updating. The vent looks much better today. Nothing protruding out of it. The vent itself is still distended, maybe an inch or so, but it seems the proper colour etc. I just did another round of water to wash, polysporin and then Prep H. I really don't know how you all get your girls...

    Blood loss, egg bound?

From what I've read here, I'm guessing it's a prolapsed vent. I washed it as best as could, put polysporin on it, and then Prep H as I've read here. I've separated her and will try repeating this a couple of times a day. Hopefully that will fix things. Thanks for the bump

    Blood loss, egg bound?

One of my girls is loosing blood. She looks like she is trying to pass something. Her comb is flopped over. Is she egg bound? Can she be saved? She doesn't look any different any other way.

How to TRAIN A DOG to NOT chase chickens? HELP! asap

How did you teach her to 1. Look away if I hold a chicken up to her face. 2. Never stare at the chickens. My dog knows the LOOK command - in the house. He will look immediately to me. Outside - forget about it! He is all chicken. I could be holding a steak and he'd be looking at the girls!

    Herding dogs around chickens

We adopted a six month old border collie/poodle last fall from the SPCA. He is wonderful. He comes when he is called in the house and he does all his basic training. I did take him to obedience classes. But he is over the top fixated on the chickens. I tried to introduce them slowly when we...

    Finishing touches on the coop!

That looks like one happy chicken farmer! Your girls look just like ours. My young chicken farmer says that he really likes the boards you used on the side of your coop. He says it looks like a log cabin for the chickens! Thanks for sharing your photos!

Please Help :( Chicken can't stand, distended belly

I have a one year old red sex lined hen. A couple of days ago I noticed she was quite wobbley. I put her in a separte area from the others and gave her food and water etc. She is only laying down in one spot, she can't get up. Her toes are curled under, she actually lays more on one side...

    Molting and feather picking

I have been letting them free range again the past few days. They do have quite a large run though. When I went out this morning to check on things, there was a significant amount of feathers on the dropping board. I went to check on her and she was sitting on the grass sleeping. They never...

    Molting and feather picking

No, she doesn't appear to be broody, and I have watched the other hens come up and pull them out of her. Their food hasn't changed. Things have been busy around here with home renovations and a new puppy so we haven't been letting the girls out of the run to eat grass and bugs as much as...

    Molting and feather picking

Our birds are about 1 1/2 years old. This will be their first molt. Most of them have spots where a few feathers have been lost. But one girl has quite a spot on her chest that is bare and the other birds seem to be coming up to her and pulling out and eating her feathers. Just her. Why are...

    Wheezy breathing

My hen - almost a year old - is making funny noises this morning. It is constant, and almost sounds like wheezy or raspy breath. She makes them both on the inhale and exhale. And the noise is constant. Any ideas? Should I be concerned?

    How cold is too cold?

We have a well insulated coop. I have not been using a heat lamp as the lowest it has gotten in the coop is about -4C. This week has been very cold and the coop has been down to -9C. I have been leaving the main door closed but leaving the pop door open so they can get to the run if they want...
