    very fragile or non-existent shells

wanted to send an update on the thin or sometimes non-existent shells with one of my hens... Very pleased to report that the vitamin d3 supplement seemed to solve the issue nicely. :) Since I had 5000iu (125mcg) caps available, which are often recommended as 1x/wk dosing for humans, I chose...

maybe a bit less active ?? As they free range, and eat from a common feeder, I am unable to tell how much she is eating or about her poop. I will try isolating her today. What are your suggestions?

    Care for Brooding hen

Yes, hens did this for ages without our help ☺️ I knew it was normal for her to leave nest only once or twice a day, but was relieved to discover that not leaving for a couple of days was also normal.

    very fragile or non-existent shells

I have six hens who have been laying for a year. I keep layer pellets available for them, but they free range across about 3500 sq ft yard. My calico princess has always laid huge eggs with relatively fragile shells. Recently, however, the shells have become extremely fragile, or even...

    Care for Brooding hen

Just an update on Buffy and her brood: Of 6 eggs, three were successful in hatching. Two attempted, but did not get past chipping the ring around the shell. One of the successful three struggled with severe pasting up. I didn't notice this until about a week. This chick seemed to have developed...

    Care for Brooding hen

Thank you so much for the reply. Yes, other hens are not able to access Buffy's nest - Her area is about 24x30 in including the nest. Food and water are about 16 in away from nest in chick fount and feeder, so hen would have to get off nest to reach it. I figured that way i dont have to change...

Run material - wood chips vs mulch

I don't know what your "at hand" resources are, but our yard has several large oak trees. These have provided an excellent source of "litter" for the floor of my pen. The hens in turn help break this down into rich soil, which is then moved to my garden area when I am ready to refresh floor...

    Care for Brooding hen

I do not have experience with hens setting/ hatching, etc. I have a Buff Orpington who went broody a couple of weeks ago. After some gentle efforts to "break the brood," I got several fertile eggs to let her set. That was three days ago. I simply blocked off one end of the hen house where the...

Thanks! The coons in the ckn yard/coop have so far not been an issue this time. (Electric fence seemed to help them loose interest.) Lost one as a young chick, the other was a wanderer annnd one day never made it home :(
