Everyone on this thread was so supportive and helpful, I figured I'd share what's happened since Derpy's death from squamous cell carcinoma.
If you recall, the love of his life and top hen was a meek, fluffy faverolles named Chamois. The week he died she laid 5 eggs. They were all fertile, 2...
Great reminder, thanks! :lau
I'd liken her less to a Camaro and more to a diesel dualie though. Haha.
Your pictures are perfect. She looks just like them. The wheezing could be the heat lately. It's cooling off finally and she's less affected. I'll just chase her around for more exercise :wee
Oh i've tried confining her for part of the day. She zooms out and straight to feed and then eats so much she can't run straight because she crashes into her massive, overfilled crop. Uuuuugh! :barnie
I just drained a hen with ascites so I know it's not that. I was hoping there might be something I could give her to make her feel full but have fewer calories. Maybe styrofoam! No.... just kidding. Although she'd probably love it. Hah.
She's both. She's been Big Boned since hatch (was convinced she was a cockerel because of her monstrously thick legs) but the wheezing and tail bobbing are new and what concerns me. She's pretty wide and squishy at the back which could be from the reliable egg production but once again, I...
Ok I know BRs can be a bit over zealous when it comes to food but my Fatty Ophelia (Oafie for short) .... takes the cake.
It's gotten to the point where you can hear her running to you before you can see her. Running to you, because she thinks you have treats. Her feet pounding and heavy...
You got it. Both genders will have pun feathers developing but females will have rounded ends and males will have pointed ends like a fine paint brush. Can't go by sheen until you know your breed as some breeds have super glossy laced feathers on both sexes. Usually color can be a good indicator...
I've learned to not trust face color/ combs/wattles until you KNOW the breed characteristics as they develop. Leg thickness, same thing - I swore I had a flock of cockerel sussexes once but the pullets were mixed in there with monster sized legs and upright stance just like the boys. NOW I can...
I ordered the metronidazole when i thought it was vent gleet. The other hen with the crop issue has a ... gleety vent so I started them both on it. I'll order the others and keep her on this for the 5 days in the meantime and see how it goes.
The Marans lost a lot of weight, still has diarrhea...
Oh my, their little flared neck feathers are so dang cute! But those shiny colorful feathers along the back are suspect saddle feathers. Please post more as they mature. I just love looking at this breed. Never had one.
:pop
I drained some fluid out of my Ancona hen and it's cloudy. :(
She's acting ok and hoping will perk up after this. I started her on metronidazole last night (125mg BID). Is there a better drug for her to be on? The plan is to keep her on metronidazole for 5 days.
Valnazen suspension was given by weight of each bird (really helpful housemate!) and repeated in 10 days. I'm pro team tube feed after that learning experience with my poor rooster so giving liquid meds is easy.
I haven't been out to the store yet to find a non laxative stool softener but had...
That article was the first I've read about using a stool softener. Massage might be working. It's still big but the consistency feels different.
The ancona finally ate a bit so i'm waiting to see what comes out the other end.
It's possible the ancona got a backlog of worms. I don't think her...
