I am building a coop in a large pole barn for my 18 white leghorns (6 are 6 weeks old and 12 are 4 weeks old). What dimensions would you guys use? I am thinking 16 X 8? Also, how many nesting boxes should I install?
Lab Mama - Those are some nice looking Cornish X's, Congrats! Just so you know in my area you could take those to an auction and get 8 - 10 bucks a piece for them.
Dan I am not to far from you, our farm is on the Lowell/Cedar Lake border. Yes I put chickens out on April 10th when we had that freakishly warm day, they were 1 day shy of 3 weeks at that time. I have had them outside in a tractor since then. I have put scrap pieces of tin on the roof in an...
We may get snow tonight! Those poor chicks I hope they make it. I gave them lots of hay today and completely covered tractor with tin to keep the snow off them. ugh
Brunty,
Thank you, I think we are experiencing the same weather. I was thinking keeping these birds to 9 weeks now instead of 8 to get a bigger bird. Do you think that is a good idea or would you still butcher at 8 weeks?
Does anybody else have Cornish X's in tractors right now? Mine turn 4 weeks tomorrow, and have been in a tractor for a week, but they haven't gained much weight this week. I am thinking getting rain almost everyday and cool temps 40's to mid 50's is really stunting their growth. I am in...
Hi all this is my first time raising chickens. I have 24 cornish X's that will be 2 weeks old tomorrow. They are eating 10 pounds of 20% Dumor starter feed and drinking 3 gallons of water per day. I give them food and water 24/7. Is this too much food/water intake? I can't believe they eat and...
I am in Indiana. I will get a close up pic tomorrow of their legs. They are starting to fly out of my brooder now, I had to make a lid last night. Do Cornish X's fly?
Happy - I am going to add 2 wheels to the back to assist in moving it each day. It actually isn't too heavy, maybe 100 pounds?
Amy - I am just going to make sure the back (longest part covered by plywood) always faces north. A lot of models I see are only protected on the North and West sides...
Awesome! I was hoping they were leghorns as when I bought them from TSC the bin said assorted pullets. My friend told me they were cornish X's. Wow glad I now know what they are. Now I can have an egg laying countdown in place of the butcher date countdown.
Just curious if you guys with more experience can estimate how old my cornish X's are? I bought them from Tractor Supply on March 6th, but think they were at least a week old when I got them? Not sure. I haven't weighed them yet, I need to get a postal scale. Just tring to estimate a butcher...
Looking for feedback on my tractor/coop. It is a "salatin inspired" tractor I plan to raise cornish X's in. It is 8' X 5' with a door to add feed and water. It is a little heavier than I originally intended so I am going to have to add 2 wheels to the back. I was originally going to line it with...
Ordered 25 Cornish Cross and 12 White leghorns from Meyer Hatchery today. Not sure of exact delivery date because my friend was adding his chicken order to mine before sending. I am so excited - I have never raised chickens before but have been reading this site for over a year as well as Joel...

Putin Says Chlorine in Chickens Unsafe
by Dan Flynn | Jan 16, 2010
Getting another American chicken into Russia just got harder.
Prime Minister Vladimir Putin weighted into the Russian ban on U.S. chicken imports.
"We haven't seen any readiness to meet Russian standards on the part of...
