Well, 72+ hours later and my hatch is done.
The first chick hatched out at 6:45am Friday morning and I had to help the last chick out of his egg at 5:00pm this afternoon.
In all, 19 chick hatched out of 30 eggs that went to lockdown.
I wouldn't have expected such a long interval between...
Here is my home made brooder. Just a Rubbermaid tote with the lid cutaway and chicken wire zip tied to it.
Got my feeder and waterer setup. My light is only keeping the temp around 88.5. I tried a heat bulb, but it heated it up to 108. I figured a little cool is better than too hot.
Thanks. I am going to transfer the older chicks this afternoon. Got my home-made brooder ready to go. Heat lamp going with a thermometer in there to make sure it is warm enough. Washed out the chick feeder/waterer and fresh shavings down.
Ready to go. Now just the rest of the eggs to...
I put some eggs in the bator on May 2nd.
I had one over achiever decide to hatch out yesterday morning.
Last night had another pipping.
I get up this morning and the one that was pipping last night hatched, along with another chick.
I have several more eggs pipping this morning.
My...
I bought one of those reptile temp/hygro and put in in my hova bator. It is reading 40% humidity and 94 degrees. My hova bator is reading 99.7 degrees and 48% humidity. I am going to get a better temp/hygro at the store today. I don't trust that $9 one.
After returning the Janoel incubator due to a non-operational auto egg turner, I bought a Hova Bator 1588 after reading tons of reviews online.
Had it plugged in for a couple of days with water in tray 1 and the temp stayed at 100 degrees and humidity at 45%.
I drove a couple of hours to...
Good idea, there is a local guy with some hatching eggs I could get.
I also have a trio of Silkies. Maybe I will gather 8-10 of those over a 5 day period and try those out.
Hmm...
Thanks for all of the informative replies!
I just ordered the Hova Bator 1588 w/ auto egg turner.
After reading multiple reviews online, I settled on this one. Seems to be the best bang for the buck.
Now to order some hatching eggs!
Thinking of getting the Hova Bator 1622A

I am just concerned about the foam construction. Would rather a molded plastic, but oh well.
I am returning my Jano8-48. The egg turner doesn't work and it sounds like people are having trouble with that model's egg turner.
I would like one with an automatic egg turner and hold at least 24 eggs.
What do you guys suggest?
Although I have the hygrometer sitting down on the egg tray and not up in the top of the lid where the sensor is. So that could be the reason for the discrepancy.
On a different note I got the humidity and temperature gauge. I put it inside of the unit and let it run for an hour or so. The temperature seems to be right on at 38°. The gauge inside his reading about 32% humidity while my gauge on the outside of the unit is reading 38% humidity.
