    Roo smaller than hens

Does it matter if the rooster is smaller than new hens being added to a flock? Rooster is easter egger, looking to add buff orpington hens.

The 9th Annual BYC Easter Hatchalong!

We have 11 chicks. They started hatching at 19 days so that was a surprise. We lost one to the cats :-( thought we had them secure enough but apparently not. And 2 died while hatching. There are 5 eggs still in the incubator but no action so far. One chick that was born at 19 days is breathing...

Diary of a Crossbeak: Support for Special Needs Chickens and their Keepers

It is with a very heavy heart I report that Cinnamon our beloved crossbeak died unexpectedly on Thursday morning. I woke up to her making a gurgling sound on her roost which is right by my bed and checked her and it sounded like she had fluid she was trying to clear. I brought her in the...

Diary of a Crossbeak: Support for Special Needs Chickens and their Keepers

Update on Cinnamon: She had us very worried Saturday was listless and weak but in doing research on the fungal infection we realized the corn I had been giving her was probably making matters worse so I mixed together canned pumpkin, a jar of baby food either sweet potato or squash, a jar of...

Diary of a Crossbeak: Support for Special Needs Chickens and their Keepers

I did a fecal ova and parasites with Giardia which was negative so that was for coccidia also. I also did a fecal enteric pathogen culture with clostridium perfringes and difficile and was all negative. The culture was negative for Salmonella, Shigella, Plesiomonas, Edwardsiella, Aeromonas or...

Diary of a Crossbeak: Support for Special Needs Chickens and their Keepers

Well Cinnamon is acting off again. We were convinced she had gotten clostridium perfringens from her food trays that are made of galvanized steel so they get gross after a while of having wet mash in them all of the time. I had forgot to pick up new ones and then she started acting off and her...

    Cross beak hen impacted crop?

Thanks for your suggestions/responses. Glad to report cinnamon is doing well. I'd say about 80-90% better. Back to eating almost normally. Her crop returned to normal the next day. Our thinking is that the baby bird food we tube fed didn't fully leave her crop overnight so she drank a lot of...

Diary of a Crossbeak: Support for Special Needs Chickens and their Keepers

Sorry to not post been busy with work and a different hen of ours ended up with egg yolk peritonitis so haven't had a chance to get on here. Cinnamon is doing 80% better. Not eating quite as much as she normally would but is eating pretty well and acting normal. She is taking a nap on my...

    Cross beak hen impacted crop?

We were giving the metacam because we think she hurts her neck eating. She has to scoop up the mush then jerk her head back and forth to get it down her throat. We tubed her the one time yesterday but I'm now thinking maybe she started having a slow crop because she hadn't been eating and maybe...

    Cross beak hen impacted crop?

I did post this on the cross beak thread but wanted to make it more general. I have a crossbeak ameracauna (easter egger) hen named cinnamon. She eats wet down layer crumbles and lives in our house. She has been sick this week. She hasn't eaten anything substantial since Tuesday. She does this...

Diary of a Crossbeak: Support for Special Needs Chickens and their Keepers

My crossbeak cinnamon has been sick this week. She hasn't eaten anything substantial since Tuesday. Age does this from time to time and usually resolves within the week. We usually tube feed her with baby bird formula and some nutrition drench and meta cam. Last time we found that her chest...

Diary of a Crossbeak: Support for Special Needs Chickens and their Keepers

Yeah our crossbar lives in our house which I get isn't feasible for everyone but she's indoors year round. Does your cross beak eat well? Dry food? We have to make a mash for ours and she gets really wet and messy. Couldn't live outdoors during winter. I had bought a product called snout soother...

Diary of a Crossbeak: Support for Special Needs Chickens and their Keepers

My cross beak has the same issue and her tongue seems to get to a certain length like it's almost like a callous then that will fall off from time to time. I've tried putting coconut oil on it but she seems to be bothered more by that than by her tongue. So I just leave it alone. She will be 3...
