    Turkenstein25's Turkey Talk for 2015

Trying my hand at answering questions as asked. ;) -How many turkeys do you have? I lost count... I have, ( I think) 3 toms, 12 hens, 6 teens and one house baby. -How many poults do you plan on hatching? "plan"... that's cute. I let my mommas hatch out what they can. Once one goes broody...

sexing broad breasted bronze turkeys with updated pics......

I hope your Narries are more pet friendly than mine. I ended up with two Narragansett Toms. They both chase my dogs around. One of my dogs 'don't play that game' and snaps at them until he gives up and goes through the doggy door where the turkeys don't follow him. The other dog, a younger...

sexing broad breasted bronze turkeys with updated pics......

Here are the pictures I was able to put together today. I hope they help somewhat. Notice that my male's snood can get very small compared to what you would normally think they should be. The best way to tell the difference (at least for me) are the fact that the snood can expand at all, females...

sexing broad breasted bronze turkeys with updated pics......

Sorry, I haven't gotten back over here for a while. I hate to go against everyone else, but I would say that the close up picture of the one turkey taken minutes apart is a tom. When they are young, the snoods don't get as large as when they are older. None of my hens snoods EVER get that large...

sexing broad breasted bronze turkeys with updated pics......

I have several turkeys, 2 of them are Bronze, and I happened to get one male and one female. Their colors seem to be identical to each other, so that wasn't helping me figure it out. At nearly 18 weeks old, though, there is no doubt which are male and which are female of all my breeds. I want to...

Is my turkey male of female? & Why ratty tail feathers?

Do you happen to have a closer up/clearer picture of the head? The snood looks pretty large to me, how old is the bird?

Yay! Glad you got them finally! How are they doing?

    The chicks in the mail!

If you haven't gotten them yet, call the post office yourself. Mine got here the very next morning after getting the call that they had been shipped. The next morning I waited and waited and waited for the call and it never came. Then my post woman came up to the door and told me that they were...

    The chicks in the mail!

I know the feeling! It was so exciting waiting for 'the big day' to come after ordering back in September.... kinda like finding out you're pregnant but then the long, long wait...... it was about the same length of time too.

2 week old poult acting 'crazy'

Well, I think is was a bug bite. He's back to normal behavior, the back of his neck is a little swollen and scabbed over and looks like a bug bite to me. Since cleaning out the box and laying down the thick layer of DE I haven't had any other problems with any of them. Yesterday another one...

2 week old poult acting 'crazy'

I have them in the garage in a wooden box 4 feet by 3 feet and about 3 feet deep roughly. I changed out the litter today, bleached the box with Clorox Cleanup, dried it, put down a thick layer of DE, put the new pine shavings in, sprinkled DE around the top edges of the box and tried to get it...

2 week old poult acting 'crazy'

Just checked on him again. He is trembling, I picked up a couple others for comparison. A couple more are starting to pick at themselves a little more than usual, and he's back to it. Also, the back of his neck is picked clean. Not sure how he did it himself or if that's even possible. I spread...

2 week old poult acting 'crazy'

I have not seen him asleep yet, but he was standing in the corner this morning with his eyes closed, not peeping wildly anymore, and not trying to jump out. When I picked him up he didn't try to run away, and his feet were cold like he's been in the corner (away from the heat lamp) for a while...

2 week old poult acting 'crazy'

I have not tried that. I have picked him up many times and he quiets down after a while but kinda freaks out at first. He doesn't seem to run into anything in the brooder though, like the waterer or the little roost I have in there. Maybe he's nearsighted.... I'll try giving him an eye test. :)
