    Best heavy weight non-tip bowl

Thank you!! Good to know about the leaching!!! When I ferment things for us to eat, I always use glass. I don't know why I hadn't thought of the leaching here. I am not currently feeding pellets, but scratch and peck brand grower blend (my girls are only a few months old, not yet ready for...

    Best heavy weight non-tip bowl

I was thinking of a weighted steel bowl; the only one I've seen on Amazon has a silicone bottom and I think my girls are likely to peck at it. I agree steel would be a good option; hadn't thought of adding a brick or the like. Thank you.

    Best heavy weight non-tip bowl

Thank you! Yesterday I filled the bowl with a mixture of vinegar, washing soda, dish soap, and water and placed it outside. It's outside now, so far no real reduction in smell but I'll keep it out there and see what happens.

    Best heavy weight non-tip bowl

I want to start fermenting my chicken's food, and I need to know what kind of bowl/feeding trough I can use that the chickens won't knock over. I bought one of those rubber feed bowls at the farm store and the smell is terrible: I don't want to use it for my girls because the smell gives me a...

    Italian seasong to deter mites?

Thank you! I don't think that I have mites yet, but I am hoping to avoid them. I use sweet pdz and barn lime (the first saturday brand,) in my coop and run, and I'm just wondering what else I can do. I have never heard of garden sulphur,, I will look into it.

    Italian seasong to deter mites?

So I thought I had read somewhere, from an old-time chicken farmer, that the best way to deter mites is to sprinkle Italian seasoning in the coop and/or run. Now, this kinda makes sense because the herbs in an Italian seasoning blend are mostly among those commonly recommended to deter bugs. It...

Is this lighter Sapphire Gem chick a Roo?

Yes, but if the hatchery didn't breed them true, then the sex-linking wouldn't hold true, is my understanding (like, for example, if the chicks are second gen)... I'm brand new to chickens, but from what I've read on this forum and on Facebook, there's been a lot of error and confusion with this...

Is this lighter Sapphire Gem chick a Roo?

Thank you so much for posting these "growing up" pics!! I have a sapphire gem chick that I'm concerned may be a roo, but at 6 weeks "she" doesn't have anywhere near as red/developed comb or wattles as your Bill does. Mine is also from TSC and had no head spot that I noticed. It's the iridescent...

    Sapphire gem - pullet, please!

Oh, no! My plan is to get future chicks from better sources... hopefully no more riddles! Thank you for your support. 🥰

    Sapphire gem - pullet, please!

It was, I just didn't know about the coloring... he was yellow with pretty racing stripes, rather than reddish with pretty racing stripes. I just had no idea at the time that chickens commonly get mis-labeled, and I did zero breed research before buying my chicks. I've learned a lot in the past...

    Sapphire gem - pullet, please!

Thank you! Because my other (different breed: cinnamon queen,) pullet-turned-roo has the same kind of hackle feathers (along with long, skinny saddle feathers, developing spurs, a cute little crow, and super early red comb/wattles,) I've been scrutinizing my chicks very closely and this one has...
