I set up a bucket with 3 nipples and my chickens don't seem to be able to figure it out! I kept them in the coop until late in the day so they would figure it out but they still won't peck at the nipples. Out of 9 chickens only 2 have figured it out. Any ideas?
Thanks for the help. The pic you directed me to looked more like scabs. This looks like shingles sticking up.. also it is only one chicken out of 13, if it was mites wouldn't more of them have it? I did have chicken mites in the coop recently but I think they are gone now.
Thanks for any help...
I think I have cured my chicken mites in the coop but I still feel all creepy and crawly after I have been out to the coop but I can't see anything on me. My husband refuses to go out to the coop any more because he feels like he is getting all crawly also.
The mites that were in the coop were...

This same thing happened to one of my new chicks last week. I thought it was dead and I picked it up to remove it but it just barely moved. Ice cold. I warmed it in my hands and then put it in our incubator. It took a few days to perk up totally but she is fine now! Just keep her warm.

I have two broody hens sitting on a lot of eggs and they just started to hatch. Should I somehow separate them from the other 18 hens? Or will the mothers just take care of them?
I have 4 broody chickens and I thought the eggs the were sitting on were not fertile, since I only had one young rooster. Well I candled the eggs and most are fertile! however I think they should have hatched 4 days ago! I think some chickens kept adding eggs to the piles but the first eggs...
OK I will keep him contained, but why would it be a death sentence? Seems like he would have a happy life with other ducks and the water would help his "noodle" problem....
Also, how long should I keep him contained before I find a new home for him? (seems I have too many males vs. females)....
I got him all fixed up, but I don't have a way to separate him for weeks. what if I set him loose on a nearby pond? wouldn't the water help his problem???
