I have two year old Rhode Island Reds & Golden Sex-Links. The behavior you're describing sounds like the same thing my hens do when I try to pick them up. Their wings sort of flare up at their sides and they 'hunker down' as if trying to avoid being 'attacked' by something, or someone. After a...
My chickens are a little over two years old and just recently (within the past week and a half) have only been giving me one (maybe two if I'm lucky) eggs a day. I have five chickens and usually get 4-5 eggs a day. Has anybody else had this happen? Do you know the reason? Thanks.
Wow. Thanks! I'd heard of a chicken getting broody, but didn't know exactly what it meant. There aren't any eggs under her, I've been checking when she comes out.
As for the 'pecked' chicken- I don't have a rooster, but it's possible another hen is picking on her. I'll watch extra closely...
One of my Rhode Island Reds has been acting peculiarly for a few days. My chickens are free range, so they have nests outside- and this particular chicken had been in the nest all day. I walked over to her and she made a weird (Ba ha ha ha ha haaa) noise. I walked away and figured she might be...
I believe that's what it's called. My aunt recently bought baby chicks, and one of them has poop attached to it's rear end. They've tried putting baking powder in the water, using vaseline, wiping it, etc. and can't seem to get it cleared off. What else should can they do? They don't want to...
I have five hens, and let them outside daily. My question however, has to do with egglaying. Are eggs that have been outside all day (in mostly shaded nests) okay to be eaten? I usually gather them at the end of the day, and like I said before- the nests are for the most part, shaded.
Thanks...
Yesterday when my chickens were outside (they go inside their coop at night) I noticed one of them was eating a small snake.
Is this normal behavior? I moved the -dead- snake away from the chicken and it just walked away. Was it alright that the chicken was eating the snake? And if so, what...
Well, it's true- my 'Big Bird' finally layed her first egg- that's who I'm asuming has layed the past three little roundies I found in the coop.
I've only hatched one of them, the first one I found- and it had two yolks :o
Yay for Big Bird!
Do chickens start with little bitty eggs? These are my first batch, I assumed chickens would not lay until they were capable of laying a full size egg.
In response to your question- I have received three eggs from my hens so far and all of them have been smaller than your average...
