Comment by 'dianacirce' in article 'Chicken bully/chicken victim - a two-sided issue'

Great timing for this article. Last fall I had a dog attack that killed 10 of my 14 chickens. I have generally been given chickens in groups, 3 Rhode Island Reds, 2 Austolorps, 5 Isa browns... I lost all of those but 1 Austalorp and 1 Isa, along with a mixed breed and a sussex. It took them...

    What breed is this?

Thank you both! They do have nice, white eggs, and are very sweet, if almost too timid.

    What breed is this?

I think they look like Australorps, they have the beautiful black, glossy feathers with the blues and greens in them, but they have a bright white spot by their "ear", and they lay white eggs. I've asked and asked, but so far haven't gotten any answers

    Sneezing Chickens

again, something you'd want to check with someone who may know better, but I read that equine dewormer will take care of them, it said to just put a dab on a piece of bread and feed it to each chicken individually, as you would want to treat all at once. Shame tho, if that is the issue, can't...

    Sneezing Chickens

From what I understand, you won't see gape worms in the stools as they stay in the sinus areas until the chickens die. But then again, this is what I've gathered from doing a lot of different searches. If your vet isn't caring enough, might want to see about a new vet :(

    Sneezing Chickens

I'd be concerned wtih parasites, or worms. I don't know for certain, as I am just not encountering sneezing chickens, but I know with other animals, when worms gets over-productive they get into the sinuses and they sneeze and shake their heads

    Sneezing Chickens

MessyChicks, I'd see about taking one to the vet for a dignosis, the shaking of the head makes me a little worried. Mine isn't doing that, just sneezing.

how can I tell if my chicken has a viral/bacterial sinus issue or gape worm?

We spent the weekend cleaning out the coop and putting in fresh hay. Once that was done her sneezing has decreased. Yesterday, she was digging around in my compost area, and started sneezing again. I have started crushing a clove of garlic in their waterer, and bought vitamins, just in case...

how can I tell if my chicken has a viral/bacterial sinus issue or gape worm?

By the way, she is not mouth breathing and no discharge. Also, her droppings are normal, so I don't see any outward signs of parasites

how can I tell if my chicken has a viral/bacterial sinus issue or gape worm?

Darn i thought I replied... I just noticed the sneezing the day I posted this, or the evening, rather. No other chickens are sneezing, but she's still sneezing. She's still happy and laying and acitve.

how can I tell if my chicken has a viral/bacterial sinus issue or gape worm?

I have a sneezy, coughing chicken so I've been doing some research and from what I've read she either has a viral/bacterial/fungal infection or gape worm. How can I tell the difference without sticking something down her throat (not comfortable doing that) or fighting to find a vet that sees...

Trying to determine whether my chicks are hens or roosters.

I wonder if the coloring could be because they are possibly mixed? If it is, indeed, a rooster, that is. they could, potentially be full BR, but it is possible they are part leghorn or RIR

Trying to determine whether my chicks are hens or roosters.

I am hoping we are both mistaken about the br, I love those two. Tho, I love them all, so I wanted them all to be girls. That one shown up close is Hopper. S/he began hopping out of the box and perching on the edge while waiting for me to refill food dishes. We have them in the mudroom while...
