    Meet the Halloween Chicks!

One year later update: It's been a long time since I've been active on here! I had a lot of living and learning to do the first year on our homestead. This is going to be a long post, so bear with me. We had plenty of backyard for our chickens (about half an acre with a 6-foot fence), but it...

    The rehoming a rooster thread

Location: Tallahassee, FL Rooster's name: Casper Breed: Light Brahma Weight: not sure, 10 lbs-ish? He's a big boy Size: extra large About: Casper was a surprise rooster, he started showing male traits only a few weeks ago. He's started to fight with our other rooster to the point that we need to...

    Meet the Halloween Chicks!

I have SO many pictures! My folks wanted to see the comparison between babies and adults, so I made another slideshow. Hope y'all enjoy!

Black Australorp & Silver-Laced Wyandottes - hens or roosters?

Thank you for the info! I wasn't able to get pictures because I picked him up to take a better look, but he's got pointy saddle feathers. Also looking at Gomez next to Morticia (a BA that I'm 99% sure is a pullet), the difference in their comb/wattles is really striking.

Light Brahma chick - hen, roo, or too early to tell?

Updating at 12 weeks! In the last week or so, it looks to me that Casper started to get saddle feathers and the beginnings of some pointy tail feathers. 😅 I also picked all the birds up to clip their flight feathers yesterday, and I can feel little bumps on the Brahma's legs where spurs might...

Black Australorp & Silver-Laced Wyandottes - hens or roosters?

Updating at 12 weeks - I'm pretty sure you're right. The SLWs look like pullets to me. I attached a picture of one of them, even with the leg bands I have trouble telling them apart. Gomez the Black Australorp has started to get beautiful green tail feathers, and I can feel on his legs...

Black Australorp & Silver-Laced Wyandottes - hens or roosters?

Thank you! I'll post pics tomorrow, if I can figure out which bird is which 😂 Might need to invest in a couple leg bands.

Black Australorp & Silver-Laced Wyandottes - hens or roosters?

Thank you!! This makes me feel a lot better about the SLWs 😂 I'll post more pics in a couple weeks, when their adult feathers start to come in. I started to notice a difference between my Australorps about a week ago, around week 5. We lost one of our Australorp chicks the day they arrived...

Black Australorp & Silver-Laced Wyandottes - hens or roosters?

Hi there, My chicks are six weeks old and finally out of my house! 🎉 They're feathering out and starting to look like real chickens instead of half-baked muppets. Some of them are starting to develop combs and wattles, and I'm a bit concerned about my SLWs in particular - is it normal for...

    Help identifying 3 babies?

Hey there! Just wanted to post some updated pictures of Emily, the blue mystery chick. Still not totally sure what breed she is, she's about 5 1/2 weeks old now.

Light Brahma chick - hen, roo, or too early to tell?

Right! About 5 1/2 weeks These are the best comb pictures I could get right now 😅 No redness, and there's no wattle development yet, which is why I'm leaning towards hen right now

Light Brahma chick - hen, roo, or too early to tell?

Just wanted to share an update - two weeks later, and Casper is finally starting to get some feathers! 🤣 I'm very glad, it looks like she'll be able to go outside with the others in two more weeks. I'm optimistic that she's a pullet at this point, but I've also convinced my spouse to let me...
