  • That’s on lovely fluff on your profile! :D What a cutie!

I used to have a silkie, yet he wasn’t very cold hardy. Is that just a silkie thing?

That's Roostito on the profile pic lol. He's a good boy! His silkie ladies are Gigi, and Josephine. :)
I have read that silkies can go either way. Many that I know are cold hardy but need extra care in the hot months. I personally believe that factors such as age, type of silkie (frizzles have a lot of trouble in the cold), insulation, litter method, and ventilation of the coop all play a big role.

My current silkies hatched during the coldest month of the year so this is technically their first winter outside. So far it's been getting to 20F, and with no supplemental heat they have been doing fine. They do roost with the other chickens which can be uncommon in silkies. I do love my chickens though so if I notice any signs of frostbite I will be adding supplemental heat (fingers crossed I don't though).

Sorry if that's too much info! I'm happy to answer any questions you may have. What kind of silkie did you used to have?

*Due to the character limit I did multiple comments lol*
