    Bare-bottomed chickens! Very worried!

So I have 7 birds (1 RR, 3RSL, and 3 BSL). This is our first winter with our babies and we are chicken novices. Four our of seven birds are looking rather roughed up. Near as I can tell, there isn't much of a pecking order (never has been with our girls). The ones who are looking rough are the...

What an absolutely crappy day. :( its miserable and windy here, Downeast. And I have always said my birds are not stupid, but I am glad I made no other claims for their intelligence. Hubby let them out into the rain this morning and now they look like drowned rats. I tried getting everyone...

Minus the feathers indeed! Thanks you for all the welcomes. Hope you all have retained power on this blustery day! I am scrambling to get laundry and housework dne before I get left in the dark here.... Poor birds are just standing in the run like idiots, getting blown over and looking rather...

    Paranoid about frostbite!

I have a heated waterer which plugs into the electricity my husband ran to the coop. For the record, my coop is not 'heated'. The meager amount of warmth that comes off the bulb, which is enclosed, is barely worth mentioning, and it is for egg production purposes only. I am sure our birds...

    Paranoid about frostbite!

It's almost 11am here and still under 40 degreees, high is supposed to be around 48. Supposedly. It's Maine, it could start snowing lol. Anyhow, I just mucked out the sand and replaced it with shavings and hay. They seem pleased. Brainstorming a drippings catcher and how to keep the waterer...

    Paranoid about frostbite!

No signs of frost thus far. And yes, the light is for egg production. On a tight budget, and eggs are a large staple of our diet, plus we produce for two other household in our family. We are switching from our summer sand to shavings and hay in an effort to keep things drier. Girls may be...

    Paranoid about frostbite!

I am sorry if this has already been asked, but I am wearing a hole in the floor pacing every night. My husband thinks we should deep litter the chicken coop, which I hear is the best method to coop-keeping, but I am very concerned that we wont keep it up properly and that moisture will gather...

What are you paying for Purina Layena pellets?

Around 18-19 at TSC. Produces some stunning eggs. The only days we haven't gotten 7 eggs for our 7 girls was the first two cold days this year. Other than that, production is great.

    Winter treats/feed for energy?

I had left over canned pumpkin (just a bit) from making coffee cake yesterday, so I mixed it into some cooked oatmeal with two chopped and cored apples....they loved it! This got me thinking, as they looked around from their perches later that evening, disdain for the cold wind evident I their...

    Chickens drinking their own urine?

Wow, thanks for all the info, folks! I have not noticed any signs of worms thus far. Our birds have been very healthy since we got them as itty bits. I'm sure they do have them realistically, but it doesn't seem to be a problem at this point. They do all consume raw pumpkin seed, btw. I will...

    Chickens drinking their own urine?

Just wanted to update. Thanks for the replies! I haven't noticed any signs of worms or disease in the flock. I think maybe I caused the digestive upset....I gave them a whole pumpkin and they ignored their feed for like two days while noshing the squash. Speaking of which, does pumpkin worm...

Review by '' on item '3 Quart Plastic Feed Scoop - Green'

The wide mouth is good for filling the scoop, not so much for filling the feeder. It can be messy.

I make my husband deal with this contraption. I'll be that pregnant lady punting this thing across the yard. Wave if you see me.

    Chickens drinking their own urine?

So after mucking out the coop and chatting with the girls, one of them squats as if to go potty, but only clear liquid came out. Three other girls ran frantically to drink it up and carried on as if nothing happened. :/ what the heck is going on?
