We used to have mealworms at a nature camp where I worked, to show kids the cycle of metamorphosis. Care was pretty easy. We kept a batch alive all summer, taking some out every week to give to all the kids in little cups to take home (yes, their parents loved us...not). We chopped up...
realsis, I'll keep your chicks in my thoughts. I love the silkie you have on your profile! Buff silkies are just the best. Are you getting more silkies? I want get one to train as a therapy chicken (I'm a child therapist and I am debating how good of an idea this is).
Cordelia has a very light pink comb that is tiny. I'll get my husband to take a picture later- he's a photographer, so his pictures come out better than mine. Right now, he is hard at work on the coop, so I'm loathe to interrupt that process- the girls are getting too big for the brooder...
#1 would have been nice when I lived in TX and Az, but in the temperate NW, I'll pass.
#2 sounds nice.
#6 would be great for free ranging
#8 & # 10 would be nice too.
I'm sure in cold place would like the auto defroster, but I have no need of it.
Try the Homesick Texan blog. I adore all her recipies, but the cheese enchiladas are to die for and pretty easy. Carnitas are amazing, too and I make mine in the crockpot. Actually, I cook in my crockpot more than in the oven.

I read the thread about sexing easter eggers and now I am concerned I have a roo, not a pullet. "Cordelia" is about three weeks old. https://flic.kr/p/FbcLoQ Is it too early to know? Thanks for any help!
Mine are roosting at times at 2 weeks old. Not all the time, not all night, but they do roost during the day, sometimes three in a row (I have 6 chicks). I put natural sticks through a cardboard box with one side removed and set that in the brooder. They seem to get the idea of roosting.
How cold is it where you are? How many adult feathers do they have? I suspect they will be fine, if they have heat for the time in beween the drives and a place to snuggle for the drive (set up cave with a box and towel. Six of them can produce a lot of heat.
Hi there!
Another Seattle-area resident here, but from the underside of the lake. My chicks are now two weeks old and they are growing quite fast. I have six chicks in at 5ftx3ft step up shower, with cardboard/pine shavings and an additional cardboard wall.
I'm using a "Mama's heating pad"...
Oh, I am picking them up all the time. I can't resist. They are so cute... and I can check them for pasty butt. I'm training my husband to do the same-that is the challenge, he is not used to most pets, much less chickens. But, he agreed I could have cats, chickens and goats, so he has to...
I got two Americanas, 2 Rhode Island Reds, 1 Barred Rock and 1 Welsummer. All seems to be doing well so far in the brooder in my spare bath! What about you? They were very nice at the Grange- I work on the eastside, but it was my first trip there. I'll likely have to go by whenever work takes...
Oh and Blooie, my thoughts are with your family. I work with kids with ASD. Y'all are working on this early, which is great. Having a supportive family is one of the best predictors for a good outcome for kids on the spectrum. I wish the best for your Kendra.
Hi everyone! I am using a modified MHP system, although I brooding indoors (in the process of building coop now). I have an always on heating pad set up over a cardboard box. It is 90 inside the box, 73 in the rest of the room. I've had the chicks for 2 days, got them from a feed store, so...
