That's a good idea. I should have explained more.... We have a lot of oak trees on our property so the compost area is probably 15x20 feet. We back a garden tractor in with a large leave bin on the back. It works well as the chickens kick around and turn it into mulch/soil by the following...
We have had a problem with a hawk lately. We live in a pretty urban area that is within 200' of large farm fields. I am looking for photos of Chunnel's or chicken "tunnels" that can be used for the chickens to get to a compost pile about 50 feet away from their coop/run. Please share any...
Thanks for all the replies. We live in a wooded area, so I haven't ever seen a red tailed around. I have seen a cooper at a neighbor's bird feeder once. I have had Marans and welsummers for years and never had a attach. Let's hope for the best!
Just wondering, I've always had Marans, welsummers which blend into our woods setting. Was thinking about getting Delawares but will they stand out and be found easier by coopers hawks etc? Anyone have any experience with different colors of chickens?
I did call our local extension, and all I got was some generic sheets. Actually tried the neighboring county. They have a poultry specialist who is "going" to call me back. That was days ago.
Our home recently has been found to have some termites. We have been talking with Orkin. They haven't given me all the safety data sheets on what they will be using, but they will also have Sentricon bait stations outside. Our chickens are located in a fenced area roughly 50 feet from the...
I have some black and blue Marans. Was wondering how many years they will keep laying eggs? I know they slow down as they get older, but anyone have a better idea on what they lay on average?
Thanks for all the replies and different suggestions! I learned a lot about molting too.
I have thought about Orpingtons, but not sure where to get them from. I agree they sound like a nice breed. I think I am going to buy from a local source that seems highly regarded on this site...
Thanks for the reply. Are Orpingtons larger than the welsummers, marans & ameracauna? Also does anyone know how the golden comet compares in size to the breeds I mentioned?
I currently have 3 golden comet (sexlink) hens. They are about 3 years old and we still get some eggs from them. They seem good and healthy. We used to have more but several died over the last year. (none recently) I've been reading that this hybrid type breed usually doesn't have very long...
I don't have any welsummers but am debating buying some 1 year old hens from Whitmore Farms in Maryland. I currently have 3 golden comet (sexlink) hens. They are about 3 years old and we still get some eggs from them. Do you think the welsummers would be a good combination with these?
How...
I've found some very helpful threads regarding the dosage amount of safeguard, particularly the horse 10%. I haven't been able to find a definite answer to the days given. I've seen once, and then once again 10 days later, 3 days in a row that's it etc etc. What do you recommend?
One other question, should I clean the run out very well now or when the med. is done? I have a hoop house run with leaves, shredded leaves, dirt floor. It is dry, with a tarp over it. In th esummer it would get wet from time to time and I would change the leaves when they started to break down.
Thanks eggsessive. She was maybe a little better this morning but not much. I did give her a little via a dropper as per one of the other comments above. She ate a tiny piece of bread with the safeguard on it. Also 3 or 4 mealworms. She took a little drink from the waterer while I was...
