do you really think so? The feathers on the saddle are all rounded on the ones I think are hens. Or is that not reliable?
I thought the same you did but now I'm starting to think 5 is just a runt.
Hi all, Let me know your guesses! Thanks for any help!
Chick 1. My guess: hen.
Chick 2: My guess: roo
Chick 3: My guess: hen
Chick 4: My guess: roo
Chick 5: I believe it's a runt. He/she isn't developing like the others.
He/she may or may not catch up over time.
Junebuggena, I had to look it up to see what you meant! I got the eggs from a friend with a mixed flock, so she may have forgotten or been misinformed which breeds she had.
Hi all,
I have 5 chicks, some are a Buff Orpington/RIR cross, or Buff Orpington/Plymouth Buff (5 mixed eggs). Can anyone take a look and agree or disagree on my guesses on the sex of these birds? Roos are illegal in my neighborhood so I need to make arrangements for them.
Feel free to...
We have a new baby chick today, and the last two are hatching as I post this! So if they all get out of the egg it'll be a hatch rate of 80%...good job for the first time Mama hen!
Thanks. Candled and no movement. Did the float test and had a sinker and 3 viable eggs according to the test. One even moved on it's own in the water so I think that at least one is partially alive at this point.
Not small hens, but the egg size was medium, as a comparison to grocery store eggs. The hens the eggs came from are in their first year of laying. She was either a RIR or a Plymouth Rock - the eggs may be from either of two hens.
I made a mistake with my broody hen - I received 2 fertilized eggs from a friend, and put them under her. Then two days later I received 4 more and put those under her. At the time, I didn't understand that the hen waits for the whole clutch and then starts sitting on them (correct?)
So the...
She's a golden comet (red star offshoot) and she has a sister (who lays). Her comb has reddened in the past few weeks, so I'm hoping that is a positive sign. It's the size of her sister's by now.
I've poked around in the bedding some, thinking she might be laying there, but not seeing...
Hi all, first post.
I acquired 4 point of lay hens (2 leghorns, 2 gold comets) about six weeks ago from a fellow member. Everyone is laying except one hen - it's become pretty obvious which one - her legs are still yellow while everyone else is washed out. Her comb has also been slow to...
