    Too young for oyster shell?

Well, I'll keep giving them all the meat bird/ grower feed for now. I really can't move the oyster shell out of the reach of the younger birds. They aren't much smaller and can hop up on anything.

    Too young for oyster shell?

I'm really not sure where to put this, but it is sorta about feeding my different chickens, so I'm putting it here. I have a few sets of chickens in different life stages. I have a group of laying hens that are about 3 years old and in with them I have a new group of chickens (males and...

    egg drop syndrome

I've been doing lots to improve the calcium intake and also how well they absorb it. I haven't tried anything for Vit D yet. They are outside all day long, so hadn't thought of it. I had one hen with this. She even got a shell stuck in her and I had to help her get it out. All of the other's had...

    egg drop syndrome

I'm seeing the same thing in a few of my hens. It started with one and now I have possibly three more hens doing it. They fit the description of Egg Drop Syndrome perfectly.

    fly tape stuck to cockerel!

My hen got stuck in a fly trap today too. I felt pretty stupid for not thinking about that. Anyway, I used oil to get it off of her (canola oil if anyone wonders). Do I need to wash the oil off of her?

    Wrong color egg

We bought some EEs from the feed store. They were advertiesd as Araucanas but I know that they are more correctly called Easter Eggers. Anyway, they are 22 weeks old now and should be laying or laying soon. We have gotten two pullet sized eggs recently but they are brown like my Buff...

gopher rat (big rat) in coop...HELP

I have peppermint planted next to my coop. Yesterday I found a rat sized tunnel into my coop right behind the peppermint. Really burst my bubble there. lol The rat was seen in a window in our basement, so I know we have one around. We also saw a 3-4 ft long snake skin, but I wasn't sure if a...

Maybe the stars did line up right. LOL Maybe they overheard us discussing getting rid of a couple of them. Thanks for the input!

    4 Hens, 5 Eggs?

Yesterday my hens each laid an egg. Four hens, four eggs. This morning (well 11am ) I opened up the coop and found 4 eggs again. Just now my DD checked the nesting box and found a 5th egg! What the heck? I didn't think that was even possible. Normally we get 2-3 eggs. Four is very rare. Any...

    Chicken nails

Thanks! Would the fact that it's been pretty moist here lately make a difference? Maybe when the ground dries out it will help.

    Chicken nails

I am having a problem with one of my chickens' nails. She is a Buff Orpington and is about 10 months old. She has been outside free-ranging for about 8-9 months. They have lots of room to scratch (and spend most of their time doing that). There have been a few times this winter that the weather...
