Advice on Chicken That Can't Walk

Hi Folks I have a rescue Legghorn between 2-5 years old. She was standing around w a droppy comb not eating. I just dewormed. Her abd is distended. I isolated her. She was not eating for several days. Would take eyedropper electrolytes, water and abx. She has now completely perked up...

    Antibiotics Needed? Recommendations after attack?

Good morning Chicken Mentor! It is so kind of you, a stranger, to help me on the other side of the country! In any event, here's the update. I thought she would die during the night since she just isn't eating. She had her head down, panting etc. She was awake this morning. I've tempted...

    Antibiotics Needed? Recommendations after attack?

Thank you oh chicken mentor! I gave her some baby aspirin as per dosage on this site, at 4 am. She was so hot and panting so badly. I just redosed her. She is less hot and seems slightly better. Still panting some, but she has moved around a little. She won't eat anything. She will take...

    Antibiotics Needed? Recommendations after attack?

I just checked on her. Still panting hard and breathing fast. Her legs are burning hot. I think a leg is dislocated or something. She's still alive but a lot hotter than she was. Thanks for any help. Giving her water w electrolytes.

    Antibiotics Needed? Recommendations after attack?

Thank you for this helpful reply. She's panting and breathing a little fast, but she does seem slightly less "shocky" looking and she's drinking some water and ate a couple of blueberries. I'll follow your advice. I have her in a box in a dark bathroom right now. I do have tetracycline if...

    Antibiotics Needed? Recommendations after attack?

My Dominique chicken was attacked last night by who knows what. I live in urban LA, but we have raccoons, possums, coyotes and even a bobcat was recently seen in our area. Anyway, my neighbor and my husband ran outside after hearing a commotion, only to find my girl huddled in a corner of...

    Chicken Losing weight and Appetite

Thank you all for sage advice. Yes, I was planning to deworm once a year, which is right for now anyway, so I did it for her and my other two. Does annually make sense? Anyway, I think I found the problem. I just bathed her w puppy lice/flea etc shampoo and after letting it sit for 15 min...

    Chicken Losing weight and Appetite

Weight loss and not eating as voraciously as in past or foods liked. No worms seen in poop. Trying to eliminate (so to speak) the obvious possibilities

    Chicken Losing weight and Appetite

Hi Chicken Lovers I have had chickens for a couple of years, thus still a newbie. I get rescue chickens generally and have struggled w a high mortality rate. I've had several necropsies, but they generally have not linked the deaths; e.g., one had egg yolk peritonitis and and another...

Chicken Necropsy--Learning the Hard Way (First page of report is at bottom of post)

One thing I have learned is to have a lot of drugs on hand for all sorts of potential maladies. This is a good suggestion and one I had not heard of when I started w my first set of chickens. I ended up panic driving all over town to purchase various drugs or have them provided to me by other...

Chicken Necropsy--Learning the Hard Way (First page of report is at bottom of post)

Thanks. I have lots of drugs on hand, having had very sick chickens. This one was on Tylan when she died. You would not have known because it wasn't in the report. I was injecting it per discussions on this forum. Didn't help because her respiratory problem was pulmonary edema, I guess.

Chicken Necropsy--Learning the Hard Way (First page of report is at bottom of post)

I have had backyard chickens for 1 1/2 years. I have had 6 chickens coming at different times. 4 were rescues. 2 were purchased as unvaccinated pullets. It has been trial by fire. I looked at chickens as pets, like dogs. Big mistake. Chickens are more like fish, at least mine have been...

    when to Euthanize?

I have a rescue Legghorn from a factory egg farm. Guessing she's about 3 1/2 years. In April 2013 she stopped laying, which was good because her eggs were thin shelled, and no amount of calcium changed that. Her abdomen then swelled up hugely. Took her to the vet, couldn't drain anything. X...
