Oh gosh the noise, terrible. I knew before getting them they could/would be. I thought having been brought here young and growing up in this environment they would get used to things and quiet down. After 6 months I had enough. I rehomed ours mainly because of the chicken aggression but the...
I purchased 5 guinea last summer and they were kept with some silver laced Wyandotte hens and a rooster of around the same age. They ended up roughing the rooster up, but did not kill him. We kept the Wyandottes coop with covered run but allowed the guineas to free range. They then started...
I wanted to post an update on our chicken coop in our pasture with our goats. As when I first posted it there was some concern by other members for chicken safety. I posted in May, around page 260. It is now Sept. and no lost or harmed chickens. Our dairy goats and chickens have gotten along...
We love our goats as much as our chickens. If we run into problems, we will find a way to work it out. I had heard about the goats eating the chicken food, that is why we have the /L/ opening, so the goats can not get into the coop. So far, so good. One hen likes the goat barn better than the...
On page 163 I posted our 1st coop (https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/596294/post-your-chicken-coop-pictures-here/1620). We basically used part of an utility shed/storage shed for our first coop (approx. 10'x5'). When we added more chickens in 2013, we built another on the opposite wall. Each...
We used Neo/Bac/Poly (from the vet's office) to clear up horribly crusted eyes, on a 2 day old chick. I have never seen a chick in so bad a condition. Good luck with yours.
How many chickens do you wish to raise? I think the cement pad would be a good location for the coop. It would keep predators from tunneling in to the coop. Our chicken coop is on a cement floor with pine bedding. Here is a picture of the interior of a coop. We took about 1/3 of a utility/garden...
Is this as chicks, at this age?
We had noticed the tail feathers on this chick were 'stubby' and the others longer. And above the tail feathers on the body, in the saddle area, that they were black and white, whereas the others looked all black. Not to mention the comb seemed larger and the...
Thank you, for your response.
Well at least we still have one rooster. But not happy if they gave us a second one (because of overcharging us for hens), and it killed the original rooster we ordered.
I purchased the last 4 of some straight run Sebrights. I have only raised laying pullets/hens, so I am excited about this new, smaller breed. Is it too early to tell the gender of these? They are about 5 weeks old. I thought I read on a thread, that some breeders could tell gender at 2 weeks...
For my daughter's birthday we purchased some Silver Laced Wyandottes for her. There was supposed to be one rooster (marked) and the rest pullets. They ended up overcharging us and so gave her an extra chick (supposed to be hen). I am concerned the extra was another rooster. We have never had a...
Sometimes it takes a bit of time to soften the crusted poo so it will release from the down and/or skin. I use warm water and a cotton swab. I find it is easier to concentrate the water/moisture to only the effected area by use of the swab, plus less irritating to the little chick than a paper...
