Hello BYC community!
Me and my boyfriend have been raising laying hens together for a couple of years now and we'd like to broaden our horizons and look into more ways to bring in money for our small homestead. The more we look into different ways and new animals for our farm we keep coming...
A couple of my hens are laying eggs with rough shells and some with extra deposits on them, I've been told its from my girls not having enough calcium so I bought some oyster shells but they WILL NOT eat them, I've mixed it in with their feed and their scratch. Does anybody have any suggestions...
I have a large flock and I'm wanting to get organized so me and my husband can keep track of all our babies. Anyway, I've discovered that its very hard to find the right leg bands for all my ladies. We're looking for leg bands (any color), must be numbered and large enough to fit my leghorns...
When I ordered my first round of leghorns Murray McMurray hatchery sent us a mystery chick and this is what he happened to be, he is simply stunning and I love him to death. He outshines all my other roosters when it comes to crowing but as far as dominance he's dead last. He's very flighty...
Hi, I'm from Nicholas County Ky and I'm looking to trade three of my leghorn roosters for some hens of any kind. (Preferably Barred Rock but I am open to anything!)
I have a handsome guy just like this he came with our hatchery order from McMurrey, he's a Silver Leghorn or also known as a Iowa Blue
Here's my handsome boy
We spend a lot of time out at the coop while they free range trying to encourage them to be friendly but they still dot't really want anything to do with us. They are nothing like my two road island red roosters, they follow me everywhere like big babies haha
Does anyone have any issues with the white leghorns being flighty? Mine wont let me gt within five feet of them without them running away even though I've raised them since chicks.
Also how do they do in cold weather?
This is more of a story rather than a name suggestion but here we go..
Me and my boyfriend ordered thirty leghorn chicks from McMurrey Hatchery and once you order so many they throw in an "Exotic Chick", this chick was the only different colored chick in our little flock so naturally we named...
We ordered them from a hatchery so for the most part yes. We think we have about three males mixed in with the bunch, we'll be trading the leghorn males later this fall for other hens.
We have thirty leghorn hens and two road island red rooster. We ordered our leghorns from a hatchery and as soon as they were big enough we let them free range during the day and put them up at night (To avoid predators). Our two roos we bought from a wonderful lady in Georgetown Ky and this two...
It's an amazing life! I've lived on a farm for my entire life but this is the first year that I'm really getting involved with it. Me and my boyfriend purchased thirty white leghorns and just purchased two road island roosters and we're completely in love!
Thanks so much for the advice! I will definitely give it a nice long soak and keep it wrapped up. I just feel so bad for her, I don't know if we can afford antibiotics from the feed store and I know we can't afford vet fees but we will do are darndness to keep it clean and soak it every night...
