    New Again.....from Illinois to Alaska

I’ve had opportunity to go from kodiak to barrow and down to soldotna but haven’t been to Juneau yet. My job may take me there soon. This state is breathtaking! The drive to Fairbanks through the Denali park. Wow. Just wow. The summer weather is unreal. Winter wasn’t too bad. But it...

    New Again.....from Illinois to Alaska

That is a spectacular looking coop!!!!! Vent strategy is on the drawing board. My old coop was smaller by far and I had a regulated air flow soffit and wall vent I could open and close. My main debate before I cut any holes is if I hot roof or do a drop down for general insulation vent and...

    New Again.....from Illinois to Alaska

Great observation. I haven't cut the soffits out yet or any vents. The three windows give some air flow now - they have screens and are easy to open/close. But, trapped moisture and air up high is bad. Problem with a lean to shed roof - is you can't easily get optimal venting the way it...

    New Again.....from Illinois to Alaska

Hello all! It has been a while since I last posted - In fact I'm quickly coming upon a year since I had to re-home my chicken and ducks due to a major life change. We moved from Illinois to Alaska. Yes - we have eagles, moose, bears....you name it. This is truly an incredible place to live...

Cleaning and maintaining backyard duck pool

Yep, I try to make an event of it in some way shape or form. Helps make it not so much of a chore. My son (who is now 17) that helped talk me into them...seems to have other things to do these days so it is just me and the ducks! My wife...enjoys their eggs, and thinks they are cute...but is...

How do you know when bumblefoot treatment can be stopped?

I'm following. I also wanted to give an update - I'm attaching a picture of Stripe's foot from YESTERDAY. Dear Lord...this is frustrating. So...she shows NO symptoms - no limping, no unusual activity. You'd think she is just a happy go-lucky duck right now. BUT, the bumble is still there...

    Additive for soft eggs?

Okay. So local tractor supply did not have the grey or liquid. But I did get more white in a small bag and found a feed that is for “max” egg with extra calcium. I also got the dummy eggs and set them up last night. I’m keeping them locked up extra long this morning in the 10x10 plus hutch...

    Additive for soft eggs?

Sorry guys I have been away from the computer. I have pure white colored oyster shells. I just did another mix with their general food and put another bowl of it near their feeder. This time of year they are chasing grass hoppers and have little interest feeding at the feeder - saves a bundle...

    Additive for soft eggs?

I saw someone say something about something to give ducks for soft shell eggs. What is is? I’ve put the oyster shells in with feed but they eat around it.

How do you know when bumblefoot treatment can be stopped?

Too bad Aflac doesn’t do pet insurance. Could you imagine the Aflac duck bringing a check to the owner of another duck for vet bills? My golden retriever has had two left leg surgeries in the last two years that have cost us plenty!!!!!

How do you know when bumblefoot treatment can be stopped?

So...I have really bad news. I'm at the end of this second round of antibiotics and treatment and no real improvement. So, I've stopped. She isn't limping at this time or favoring the foot so I'm going to keep an eye. Yesterday we decided to do an inventory of the other three girls feet...
