Easter Egger mixes at 13 weeks - which are roos?

Three of them are of the lighter complexion, but you probably only see two at a time in the photos. Am I hearing right that you can sex Easter Egger mixes by color scheme? What was the strongest sign on the black one? These are pictures of the parents from the egg supplier. The one with...

Easter Egger mixes at 13 weeks - which are roos?

I'm sure you all like a challenge. These pictures may contain a black silkie hen and Rhode Island Red hen - I know what those are. There are also 5 chicks 13 weeks old today, hatched by the silkie The black one is half pure Ayam Cemani and half Blue Wheaten Ameraucana. (both based on...

Black Star hen gone broody in Camas, WA

It's not looking likely right now. She seems to be standing permanently. Not even sitting down. So don't worry about saving any eggs for me.

Black Star hen gone broody in Camas, WA

I found pictures on this message board of broodies in baby goat carriers - I mean large dog crates. So I put Broody in one tonight with plenty of straw, two golf balls and an egg. It will at least keep her in there.

Black Star hen gone broody in Camas, WA

I think/know that all those things will happen if we leave Broody in her original spot. The other hens are laying eggs there now, and they don't have to wait for her to leave the nest. They just lay the eggs, they roll under her, and she commences guarding them all. We pull up to five eggs a day...

Black Star hen gone broody in Camas, WA

Well, Broody has managed to rejoin the flock after escaping from her jail (it's only four feet high), and got back in with the help of a neighbor. I'm not sure I can move her and get her to brood anywhere else. Any more suggestions?

Black Star hen gone broody in Camas, WA

All I've read so far indicates separating. Leaving her in her favorite spot is not practical because other hens will keep laying eggs there, and she can't protect the chicks as well. Perhaps that's the same for you. Her favorite spot is in an astroturf sloped nestbox. Doesn't seem like it...

Black Star hen gone broody in Camas, WA

Well, she's not staying on the nest post move. I think I will leave her in the chain link jail until she either sets or lays an egg.

Black Star hen gone broody in Camas, WA

After escaping the abduction attempt by hiring a decoy jailbird Monday night, Broody made the mistake of thinking the danger had passed. I successfully abducted her last night and put her into into the new nest box and enclosure while she was half asleep. This morning, though, she was soaking...

Quote: Men! That's it! I need to send my wife out to move chickens after dark. I'll tell her it was your idea.

Black Star hen gone broody in Camas, WA

Well, this is embarrassing. I believe I transferred the wrong hen last night. There were two hens in that nest box at night, so I had a 50/50 chance. Broody was in her usual nest box, puffed up like a chuzzle when we check for eggs. A transfer didn't seem plausible in the daylight. I'll have...

Black Star hen gone broody in Camas, WA

Thanks to all for the encouragement. I'll be setting up the new enclosure today. I'll try moving her at night and see if she stays broody for a few days. If she does stick, I'll be getting eggs. Glad to know some of you are around here. If it does look like we'll have chicks, I will need...

    rabbit waterers for chicks??

Here's one. http://www.farmtek.com/farm/supplies/prod1;ft1_poultry_equipment-ft1_poultry_watering_systems-ft1_hoses_nipples;pgwc1045.html I've had some like these in PVC pipes and done pretty well. Day old chicks have done okay with them in their brooder.

Black Star hen gone broody in Camas, WA

Thought I would share. My 8 year old daughter and I have six year old hens, Black Star and Rhode Island Red. Lately, a black star hen has been inhabiting the nest box. We pick the eggs out from under her and they are warm. Shey'll stay in there even if there is just the golf ball. I think...

    My square plastic bucket nestbox

I wasn't sure if the golf balls would help - since they kept rolling down to bottom of the rollaway nest. However, today I found another pullet egg, and it was in the next box, down in the collection area next to a golf ball. An egg in the right place!
