Help ! Where can I find sand for coop?

In Pennsylvania I found sand to be fine spring to fall, but it freezes in winter, then stops turning and is a mess. I'm going for deep litter in run this year.

Help ! Where can I find sand for coop?

Sand is silica. What you want to avoid is the fine silica dust (actually more complex than that, respirable crystalline silica is the danger). For the purpose of sourcing sand for use with chickens, look for sand that is washed. That would remove the small risk that is involved.

    Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

Long time reader, first time (or close to) poster checking in from Lehigh Valley (Allentown). We have a small flock. Previously we bought started pullets, this time we went with day old chicks that are now 4 weeks old. Looking forward to getting them outdoors!
