Just verified my order for next week. It is our yr to rotate flocks. I order from Schlecht Hatchery in IA as they are close enough to me in ND to feel comfortable about them shipping. I have 50 tried and true egg layers, 20 black sex link, 20 isa browns and 10 speckled sussex along with 75...

Topic of the Week - Chicken Behaviour and Flock Dynamics Part 2 - Bullying Behaviour

At the moment, we have 90+ birds (5 roo's, the rest hens) ranging from 3 mo old to 4 yrs in one coop. We also free range our birds on 1.7 acres, so most are only in the coop either at night or when laying eggs. We also have 3 tiers and 5 areas in the coop. A shelf that was supposed to be for...

Hen has little white worms in her poop. What is it?

Do you know how fast the worms spread from chicken to chicken. I was just watching my chickens by my window door and one of the hens pooped and I looked at it for a wile and some little worms started to move around in the poop and I started to get worried. And I am very attached to some of...

Topic of the week - Free Ranging

    - What pros and cons have you experienced when deciding to free range your flock? We have just under 2 acres in our main yard which is surrounded by a dike (we own a total of 7 acres around the house). The chickens are def more healthy and happy, and use less food. A few have wondered...

How do you stop feather eating/ pecking?

We use a thick layer of Vaseline over the injured area...usually one peck of it from the others, and they leave it alone... just need to reapply every so often. As for protein, we feed our chickens left overs, including meat. My husband will also feed them fish scraps when cleaning fish, and...

The waste! Oh the wasted feed...

We have been feeding ours mash for the past 2 yrs... we don't let it get to the "ferment" stage...as they don't really care for it at that stage....and it never lasts long enough in the pan to ferment.....we just mix it daily till the consistency of thick oatmeal....it takes only a few min...

Spraddle Leg - Splay Leg Treatment Instructions

SpeckledHills, I tried the rubberband, but she/they got it off, so now I have embroidery thread, but that may still be a bit too wide, so I may be going to the band-aid.... she is a lively little thing and gets around fine on the one leg, but we will see how it goes.... her foot has flattened...

Spraddle Leg - Splay Leg Treatment Instructions

Thanks Ruth, hopefully this is what is wrong with my latest chick.... the one leg seemed turned a bit, probably from having a hard time hatching and it tries to walk on the side of the foot... I am trying the rubberband thing and will see just how well or if it works. Thanks

    Unabsorbed yolk sack HELP!!!!!

It was just the yolk sack that had gotten bloody when he pulled himself out of the shell.... after it had dried up and started turning colors so I knew he was not getting any more from it, I cut it. About 30 seconds later, he crapped on me, so I think he is ok. I had to give him a warm water...
