I have a chocolate orpington roo. He's the sweetest, quite timid, thing right now. Can't remember exact age...5-7 months, maybe. He's smallish, so I'm guessing he's either slow-growing or bantam. Anyway, what are the chances he'll stay friendly? He doesn't crow, that I've ever heard yet.
I keep a meat chicken as a pet. She's kept to herself but can see the main flock. I feed her 1/3-1/2 cup layer feed a day, with a treat of something once a day. She's pastured, so I make her forage (by that, I mean, I don't leave feed out) for exercise. This girl is ALWAYS hungry, though. Lays a...
This hen survived breaking her leg, but it's now useless. She can't walk, run...anything requiring legs. She can stand and hop, getting adept at one-legged motion. The main flock picks on her, and she can't flee predators. What does one do with a special needs chicken?
According to vet, her leg is fractured above the joint. He said keep her immobilized for three weeks then bring her back.
She has food and water close by. Her eyes are bright, and she's vocal ( at times).
She laid an egg at some point. Found it sitting beside her this morning.
Currently, we're waiting for the vet to see her, but he didn't promise anything.
She's over 2 years old and has been healthy until now. I suspect her leg got caught in the fence and wrenched while she was fleeing a bullying australorp hen. She can stand and hobble short distances, uses her left wing for balance, but mostly spends her time laying down. So far, she still eats...
I have a brahma/marans X who doesn't seem to be able to walk. At first, I thought she was dust bathing, but when I approached, she didn't move, stand, run away...nothing. Her right leg is sticking out at an angle I don't think it should be able to, and it's...loose, floppy for lack of a better...
