Hen showing same beginning symptoms of a mystery illness that killed another hen this past fall.

I appreciate the good vibes sent my way :) I hope someone is able to help you with your girl! Hopefully mine is just having some wacky hormones with the changing of the seasons and that she'll level out and be ok. I'll keep a close eyeball on her for the time being. See if I notice any change in...

Hen laying 2 eggs a day. Worried this is a precursor to something worse! Help please!!

That's a great idea. I'm going to start doing that now too. Thank you for helping me. Hopefully, like you said, it's just her hormones acting up and I have nothing to worry about. Fingers crossed!

I feel a lot better knowing this, thank you. And yep, they have access to oyster shell. I mix some into their food and have some scattered in their eating area. Is there a better way for me to present the oyster shell to them?

Hen showing same beginning symptoms of a mystery illness that killed another hen this past fall.

I have a Buff Rock hen that just turned 2. For the past two or three weeks she has been laying 2 eggs at a time, but they are poor quality. One is chalky and rough and the other is thin shelled or just a membrane. I am worried because this time last year (March) I had a Buff Orpington that had...

Watery greenish poops, decline in appetite, not as active

Well the vet called me back today and said that she was negative for parasites, which I was glad to hear. He asked me a few more questions about her so he could look up more information as to why she has lost so much weight this past year. Hopefully when he calls back tomorrow I will have a...

    Roo or pullet?

*Sigh* I believe you might be more than 85% correct about Blue being a roo :( I was just looking under those massive wings tonight and discovered some lovely shiny saddle feathers coming in. Those darn wings are so long and cover so much that I couldn't see anything until I actually pulled the...

    Roo or pullet?

Thank you for your input! I see what you are talking about. They are darker and silkier. Blue's feathering is so funky since he/she is half cochin. The mom has very dull feathers and the father has normal shiny feathers (not counting the cape and saddle feathers). It's the very light coloring in...

Watery greenish poops, decline in appetite, not as active

I am so sorry for taking FOREVER to reply. She is still light as a feather, and coloring is off, but still eating/drinking and active. And her curiosity is still strong, which is one of her best traits. I have been treating all the birds for worms for the past year or so. I worm them in the...

    Roo or pullet?

Oh no! *bites nails* Here is an older picture at 10 weeks. I don't know if it helps or makes a difference, but the lighting is better.

    Roo or pullet?

I've had to play this guessing game before and have a bad habit of seeing what I want to see. This is 15 week old Blue, a Blue Cochin/EE cross. I see pullet, but then have second thoughts when I look at her legs, which are really thick, and her neck feathers which look pointy. In the past my...

Watery greenish poops, decline in appetite, not as active

Anyone have ANY advice? She is back and forth between being her normal self and acting lethargic. I don't know if it is something that she ate, age, if she needs to be wormed (I'm deworming tomorrow), or if she just has some other illness that slowly taking effect. She still has no interest in...

My hens won't lay in the Coop.

Wow I feel bad because I haven't looked on here for a while! Anyway all the girls have themselves sorted out. The two problem birds actually started laying in the coop not too long after I wrote that post. They have 6 nesting boxes to choose from and everyone is happy :)

Watery greenish poops, decline in appetite, not as active

My 2 year old Buff Orpington has not been herself as of Sunday. She has been standoff-ish and not as excited about food. Of the 8 birds I have, she is top hen. Always very nosey about what I'm doing, practically beating the other chickens out of the way when I bring out snacks and just a very...

My hens won't lay in the Coop.

I have 2 hens that have just started laying and they refuse to lay in the coop. They not only refuse to lay in the coop, but they make a full on jail break from the run and head to the bushes in the front yard right against the house. I haven't had this issue with any of my other hens. I've seen...
