Hatching Silkie Chickens and Quail together - Bad idea?

I wouldn't put the quail eggs (or any eggs) in a tupperware bowl. When they hatch the bottom will be to slick and cause problems.

Button Quail Housing. Will this work ...

Could we get pics posted of various setups that fellow BYC'ers use, especially outdoor button coops? I'm looking for ideas for summer time coops, maybe on a grass covered area.

    Buying Cotournix quail in Alabama

I'm in the process of moving and will probably move my birds within the next week. I'll likely thin down to around 100 so could help you out. 9 hens and 3 roos should do fine in 2' x 3' pen. I feed 22% protein layer pellets and 12 birds will go through about 1 quart a day. One word of...

    Buying Cotournix quail in Alabama

When you say a "small flock", what numbers are you looking at? I have between 110 and 125 and consider that a small flock. When I sell adults I get $3 each and normally sell 3 hens and 1 roo as a breeding group. Mine are kept in all wire cages, 2 ft. x 3 ft., and I keep 12 birds to a cage...

Cute as a..... button! (button quail chick vs. various egg pic)

Those little "bumblebees" can really zip around too!! And it looks like he's getting ready to take off. Just remember they'll be flying in a few days and if your brooders not covered the real fun of chasing them begins. Kenneth

    eating pheasant eggs

Much like a chicken egg. Ratio of yellow to white is higher so, to me, have a better taste. Kenneth

what did I do?!?! killed a quail :(

The females can also turn on a male and peck him down. If you want to save the bird, just isolate it, you'll be surprised how quickly they recover. I've had birds scalped so bad they sat in the corner of the cage and refused to go to water or feed if other birds were near. Within three days...

AL/TN/GA Need a source to buy quail!

As soon as I get moved, I may be able to help you out with coturnix and button quail. Right now I'm giving my eggs to a friend. I'm getting about 50 coturnix eggs a day so I should be able to hatch what you want. Kenneth

Favorite thing to do with quail eggs?

Deviled Eggs Pickled To pickle, boil and peel (I use vinegar to remove the shell), fill a pint jar with eggs and add 1 tablespoon of Legg's Sausage seasoning, cover with boiling vinegar, wipe rim of jar and place lids and rings on jar. Have never had a problem with jars sealing. Ready to eat...

Do these ladies look like dwarves?

Length of ears suggests that they are small bodied rabbits. It's been my experience with mutt type rabbits (what I raise) the larger meat type have longer ears in relation to their head. If you're raising for pets, that coloration along with small size sells well in this area. Now to irritate...

    newbie question.

In my 2' x 3' pens I keep 12 coturnix quail, (1/2 sq. foot per bird). My ratio of birds are 3 to 1, so that's 9 hens and 3 roosters. In my 1 1/2' x 2 1/2' pens it's 8 birds, 6 hens and 2 roosters. I'd certainly keep the "extra roo". One's not enough to eat and you could always lose your...

    Tried Joel Salatin's kill/gut methods

Love the idea of using rope for insulators. Been putting off installing electric fencing due to all the brush that would need to be cleared. Congrats on the successful processing. Kenneth

    Can you eat pheasant eggs?

Don't want to get between you and your mother, but yes, you can eat the eggs. They're a good size for pickling also.

    New to Hatching Quail

I started with the styrofoam incubators, and they are all pretty much the same. Best advice I can give is to set it up where you WILL NOT have major temp swings. Completely fill water trays each day. DO NOT open except to turn eggs. When I started, I was getting 80% hatch with with no fan...
