    Freshness after processing

How long can a freshly processed turkey stay in a cooler on ice before it has to go in the freezer? If I have my birds processed tomorrow (Wednesday) can they stay in the cooler or fridge until thanksgiving or do I need to freeze them after 3, 5, etc. days of resting in the cooler?

    Early morning squawking hen

So I didn’t put two and two together but the other hen (a Black Australorp) has been broody and in the nesting box. It could be that the RIR is alarming because she “can’t find” the BA. the BA was in a broody breaking dog crate the last two days and broke last night and then no squawking this...

How to tell if a hen is finished laying?

We’re in Texas (Dallas) and it’s steadily in the mid to upper 90s. We use a box fan for airflow. The three keys to keeping them cool are fresh water, available shade and then a fan if you can. In addition to that you can have frozen bottles of water for them to lay next to or perch on (gallon...

How to tell if a hen is finished laying?

This answer will depend heavily On where you love but if it’s hot there this time of year (summer in the North America area for us) then they’ll stop laying typically. They need to focus their energies on staying cool.

    Early morning squawking hen

good morning all, We have a RIR hen (about 1.5 years) that in the last 2 weeks has begun squawking (very similar to their egg song) beginning at 6am and continuing on and off for 2-3 hours. We live in a suburban neighborhood and the legality of our chickens by way of the HOA is precarious at...

when will my girls start laying

We have 2 EEs, two BA and 2 RIR. one of the EEers has been laying for 2 weeks and one of the RIRs laid her first egg today! I assumed we wouldn't get any until Spring but here they are!

Roosting ON TOP of the coop

We absolutely have owls in the area (I've seen/heard them on neighbors rooftops from time to time) but to dissuade them and the hawks we have I've run a fishing line matrix above their entire enclosure as well (pics tomorrow) and it's kept out all airborne predators so far. I've had hawks...

Roosting ON TOP of the coop

That's my thought too. At what point do I give up and just let them roost on top of the coop if they want to? We haven't had any nighttime predator problems that I've seen (there are 3-5 rabbits always running around the neighborhood at night) but I don't want to offer them up either as they're...

Roosting ON TOP of the coop

Yeah, I was thinking that swapping out the 1x2 might be a relatively easy fix if that works better for them. Thanks for the advice and definitely pictures to come tomorrow. thanks!

Roosting ON TOP of the coop

Okay, so we have two hens, one RIR and one BA both about 6 months old that sleep on top of the coop about 3 out of 5 nights and it's driving me crazy! The other four (1 RIR, 1 BA, 2 EE) all go in the coop and hop on the roosts just fine. This issue has been going on, on and off, since they came...

1 of 6 roosting on the coop

Jessie, my wife has suggested that very same thing but I'm concerned about the logistics of that inside the coop. The coop we have has two perches each about 4 feet long so with them perched 4 on one and 2 on the other or 3 and 3 (those are their usual configurations) they seem to have plenty of...

1 of 6 roosting on the coop

Good evening all, We have 6 hens (2 EE, 2 RIR, 2 BA) that are all around 5 1/2 months. They've been out in their living area (coop + covered run + 250 sq. foot fenced in area) for about 2 1/2 months now. They all took to the coop pretty easily when we moved them out but we occasionally had a...

He is an Easter Egger from a local farm but we had to get rid of him a few weeks ago as we're only allowed to have hens in our neighborhood currently. we hatched 6 from eggs from the same farm and all 6 came out different.
