Good advice above. I always leave my broodies alone. Fowl have been hatcing eggs for eons, and I've never seen one die from starvation or dehydration. As far as OE's go, you don't have to cross an OE rooster to your Marans hens to create OE's. Mating any Araucana rooster to your Marans will make...
That's the age I figured they were, according to comb size and plumage. If the one on the left's comb doesn't grow any time soon, you'll have a breeding pair. Quite often, Barred Rock hens will go broody and hatch eggs. They're generally great mothers, too. Time will tell if they're both males...

Raising chickens is an addiction. There are no support groups to help you break this addiction. At the very least, you will only find support and encouragement. You've been warned...
Looks like you have a pair or Barred Rocks. The right one appears to be a male, due to the puffiness of his comb, and the left one appears to be female, since the comb is short and thin. You'll know for sure in a couple of weeks.
As for my "needs of modern society" statement, I was simply pointing out that the red is no longer a vital part of our culture. Mass food production has taken the place of family farms. If it wasn't for the dedication of a few red fanciers, the breed would have died out a long time ago. Modern...
I agree wholeheartedly. Just to be clear, in my previous quote, I never said darker feathers were harder... only tighter. In my experience, lighter colored reds tend to have feathers that are larger, and looser. RIR feathers should not be large, or small... they should be medium width. Reds with...
If I remember correctly, lighter feathers tend to be loose. Darker feathers tend to be tighter. Not only that, the darker color has a more aesthetic appeal to it. To achieve this, breeders push the black gene to it's limit. There is a fine line between correct black, and excess black. Finding...
Thank you for the quick reply, Cathy. I hope you've been having a wonderful Christmas day!
Yes, I'd like to save her if I can. Not that she's an important bird, but I'd like to know how to treat this in case one of my valuable Rhode Island Reds become affected with this. My Reds are in another...
casportpony , I have one hen that has developed a loud cough. Lately, she's less active than the other birds in the pen (7 others), but other than coughing, she seems to be healthy. She usually shakes her head after coughing, and her beak opens quite frequently. Is this likely due to a...
If you have facebook, contact Richard Peters. Richard is in charge of setting up the Norman, OK show. He should be able to give you a list of those who will be attending. https://www.facebook.com/apa.judge?lst=1199996532:100006825125187:1509506296
They look good for their age. REALLY good! I see nice type on a couple of them (just the right angle), nice dark color, and some really long flat backs on the males. Got to watch that tail angle on the males, though. Some of them look like they're approaching 45 degrees, instead of the...
I can't tell the gender, because males and females look alike. It doesn't matter to me... I love angelfish and have never owned one.
Thanks, I like his color also. I'm very active on the RIR threads on FB, and an active member of the Rhode Island Club of America, so I am in contact with people...
I am ashamed. I got so caught up with raising chickens, that I let the tank conditions slide a bit. Nothing that can't be undone. I even added another (rather expensive) fish... a Koran Angelfish. It's still a baby, and it will go through many color changes before it's an adult...
