In better light today, I think the blood on her neck was from feathers being pulled out by the roots. I don’t think anything broke her skin. She’ll just look funny for awhile.
Thank you. I do appreciate all the suggestions we were given. It’s not possible to take all advice given in situations like these. We had to pick what we thought was most relevant to the situation and thankfully it turned out well.
Here you go! I checked on them as soon as it got light this morning and they seem happy. They're not afraid of us at all so in their minds maybe it was all just a nightmare. I'm curious if anyone can identify Dahlia (the white one). She looks like a Sussex to me but she has a lot of buff...
UPDATE!! I went to check on the girls tonight. I immediately saw signs of a struggle of some kind. They were all there but Petunia had all her neck feathers missing on the back of her neck as well as blood. My fear that our presence would change their habits and make them vulnerable proved...
Thanks for the sug
Thanks for the suggestion. We’ve been doing very similarly to that - we’re leaving a jackpot of treats in the makeshift pen and also sitting right outside it and having the girls come to us.
it’s going well - thanks for asking! They’re going in the makeshift pen and running right up to us when we get there every evening. Rose is still shy and won’t come closer than 4 feet. I’m definitely encouraged at the progress in only 1 week’s time!
Yes, I have a feeder with layer crumbles in it in the makeshift pen. Petunia was in the pen when we got there yesterday. I’ve been tossing Grubblies in when we leave so hoping I can get several of them to go in at once and then we can shut the door, pick up the pen and take them home.
I haven't seen any sign of eggs. There is so much tall grass along the creek and so much scrub brush it would be pretty lucky to find anything. I am not good at guessing chicken age but comparing to my girls, I would bet they're around the same age (3) or maybe even slightly older for one of them.
That's my quandary - there are a lot of coyotes in our area and it's elk hunting season so there are a lot of hunters in the woods right now. They've been surviving so far by staying hidden and being cautious. My worry is that our befriending them will make them bolder and thus more accessible...
