Chicken leg limp after dog attack

How long did it take for you chickens leg to improve/ go back to normal? My Hen was attacked a little over 2 weeks ago by a neighbors dog. One deep gash and an another small puncture. I irrigated, just like you did. Been keeping it clean. She’s scabbed over pretty well now. And her feathers and...

Insulation for a Northwoods Coop? (Materials)

It’s an old shed it has the ventilation at the peaks of the eaves on both ends. I was thinking about adding cross breeze fans for that. And I was thinking about adding more/bigger ventilation below those eaves.

Insulation for a Northwoods Coop? (Materials)

I am putting up the interior walls for my coop this week and debating on insulating it. I have lots of old baby and kids clothes that I could put in between the paneling to help keep warm in and any drafts out. But I’m wondering if just adding interior walls will be sufficient for the cold...

    Dust Bath for Chicks?

I’m planning on doing this too… All the snow is melting fast but the dirt is still wet. I’ve been taking scoops of the wet sand/dirt from my yard putting it on the tray to dry and collecting to give to my five week old chicks/chickens while they’re still in their brooder. thinking about mixing...

    Good treats for baby chicks

How would you have them outside? Like in a contained fenced area? We have 3 acres but nothing fenced, so I would need to acquire something. We are also still under 3 feet of snow, so it will be a while before I can take them out (my girls are 4 weeks old)

they had them for the first time today! My Wyandotte's loved them, but the leghorns didn't go as crazy for them, but enjoyed none the less.

Preparing Scrambled Eggs Treat for Chicks

I did notice them very excited and pecking at the grit a lot. I've only been offering a small scoop about 1-2 times a day for the past 4 days They had a scrambled egg for the first time today, the wyandotte's loved them but the leghorns weren't as crazy for them. Regardless, it was good fun to...

Preparing Scrambled Eggs Treat for Chicks

The girls now have grit! They’re digging it. I think I’ll let them chew on that for a couple days before I introduce treats. All our dirt is still froze and buried under a foot of snow 😅 we have fireplace ash and potting soil form the store… you think that’s alright?

Preparing Scrambled Eggs Treat for Chicks

I have 3 week old chicks, they have only been eating their starter/grower crumbled feed. I would like to give them some scrambled eggs as treats eventually (to start) but I am unsure the best way to prepare them in the pan. I feel I should not use butter, but am wondering if olive oil is ok to...

How many chicks REALLY per 10x10 heating plate? And how many fit in a baby crib brooder (and for how long)?

I have the 10x10 brooder plate and it fit my 15 day old through week old chicks fine. But now that they are 1.5 weeks old, there is not enough room at all. I have a few hanging their heads out the side and a couple that are not under at all. I have to get a light from my TSC store to make sure...

    Picking wing feathers

I was feeding my chicks from hand with some regular starter feed. And this one looks like the tip of her wing feathers are bent and getting pecked off. Has anyone seen this before? Should I be worried or separate her from the rest? I have 15 total, They are only a week old. I do have a small...

    New Chick Momma Member

Hi all, my name is Randi. I am a first time chicken momma. We bought 15 chicks last week from TSC. We were told we bought 5 Wyandotte, 5 leghorns and 5 cream legbars… (well, they are definitely not leg bars) But that’s ok, we’ll find out soon enough, and then we can get the ones we wanted in...
