i am in calhan colorado
one of my chicks pipped at 16 days, i looked in the window of the incubator and there was a pipped egg in the turner, it had only been in for 16 days.....
we have hatched 10+ chicks in the last week or so almost all pipped around 21 days give or take a day
so we moved the pipped egg to the...
i personally draw the line just before the whole lance and drain thing, why make the poor chicken suffer, its not like the vets give you pain killers for them, they have to suffer it out, i just think its better to put em down rather than make em suffer
YOU HAVE A BROODY HEN!
let her have her eggs and you will have chicks, assuming you have a rooster of course. alot of times when they really badly want to go broody they will hide em growl at you and peck at you , it is all normal for a broody hen, CONGRATS!!
once he starts falling asleep watching matlock id say he is too old
just kidding
if he is mounting the hen he is fertile, dont think they really ever stop being fertile
well the egg soes not solidify until it is laid, so i wouldent imagine you would be able to feel a shell anyways
Give her a warm bath, for 20 minutes or so then use some epsom salt . then, tuck her under your arm and put some vegetable oil / olive oil on your fingertip, lube the vent with...

been there with 2 of my birds , one was a silkie roo, the other was a royal palm hen
never did figure out what it was , tried everything short of a vet, ended up putting em down
as time goes on the chicken will go blind as the swelling will reach o over the eye and glaze it with a weired...
the bloodshed is rare but man when it happens, holy crap!
and i have to second what kuntrygirl said here, heritage turkey hens like bourbon reds and narangansetts are
the best mothers period, when they go broody which is not hard to do by the way. they are amazing
the hens are bullies for...
here is the deal, you CAN keep turkeys with your chickens we do and they get along great,
they eat the same food as out chickens lay in the same nesting boxes etc,, etc...
the heritage breeds also go broody real well.
for example right now all 3 of outs are sitting on a clutch
they take...
