11/7 - first four-egg day in our flock of six -- we think Violet started to lay but are not sure. That would leave only Betsy, our Easter Egger, out of the club. Chickens enjoying pumpkin today.
10/30 - Flower and Priscilla first lay, first day with three eggs.
11/2 - Violet squatting but not yet laying, as far as we can tell.
11/4 - Hortence first lay after being broody. She had 12 days with no eggs, 10 after she was broken of broodiness.
10/24 - only took one day to break Hortence of broodiness in chicken jail. She has been "normal" but slightly more aggressive with the other hens since her release back to the community, presumably to try to re-assert her place in the pecking order. Normal night 10/24-10/25. Everyone was down from the upper coop eagerly awaiting the freedom of the yard in the morning.
10/23 Hortence broody, we put her in chicken jail to try to break her. She was intimidating Nell from using the nesting boxes, and at least a couple of the younger hens are ready to come into lay.
10/20 - Hortence broody. Expelled her three times and then had to lock her out of the coop. She spent the afternoon circling around it looking for a way back in.
Added pine needles to yard.
9/7/21 Yetta alas turns out to be a rooster so has gone off to cousin Kristin's farm, and Flower the Barred Rock will return in a swap to fill our vacancy. We are sad to lose such a beautiful, mellow fellow (as it turns out) to the no-roosters law, but it will be a happy free-range life ahead for him.
8/17/21 - Second brood joins the yard, Hester and Flower are sent to cousin Kristin's farm.
