Love- but not healthy enough
Pros: So friendly, beautiful birds
Cons: Either its the breed, or me (I think its the breed) I cannot keep these birds alive
I have been keeping chickens for 7+ years. Of all the breeds I love the Orpingtons and have kept the buff variety. I had one die of sudden chicken death syndrome at 15 months, then to get a day old that dies on day 4 and then replaced her with another that died of sudden chicken death syndrome at 9 months. As others have stated they are super friendly and wonderful, but I can't handle the heartbreak and there are other breeds that I have kept that are thriving and laying at 7 years of age :idunno

Pros: beautiful, unique, layer of medium blue/green eggs, QUIET!
Cons: bossy

This is Arianna Huffington, I guess she lived up to her name because she is the number 1 in our pecking order. She is beautiful, lays semi consistent blue green eggs and is VERY QUIET!!! She is curious and smart. Her lack of waddles and small comb make her an excellent candidate for the northeast winters, but her slight nature and small size (4.5 lbs) makes her rely on her besties to huddle with on those sub zero nights. She is easy to pick up and hold, her foraging qualities are poor, but what would you expect from Arianna Huffington?!? She is alert and a good alarm for the flock, often huddling the others to safety when a bird calls or small plane flies overhead.
Pros: Great layer of beautiful brown eggs, curious, alert, friendly
Cons: Loud, Does not bare confinement well, large comb easy target for frostbite

This is Jolene, She is my black sex link. I picked her out at the feed store because I knew she would be a girl :)
She is friendly, vocal and talkative (sometimes a bit much for my husband as she thinks she is a goose) She is an amazing forager and is the only one in my small flock that gulps down slugs. (this is a huge plus for me as most of my garden is hostas) I trust that she will look over the flock because if anything gets in the way I know she will attack predators and protect her two besties!

Pros: She is friendly, lays consistent large brown eggs, beautiful
Cons: having an extra fluffy bum creates the need to wash her vent on a weekly basis

This is Madame Curie, she is smart, curious and friendly. Not that I have favorites in my small flock- but she is my go to girl when I am introducing a newbie to chickens. I trust her, know she will be gentle and kind and patient with the little ones. She lays beautiful big brown eggs and has a great personality. I couldn't imagine a flock without this breed!
