I have a young Barred Rock named Lizzy. She might be my favorite of my new birds! She is definitely the most friendly.
When I sit down in their pen, she jumps onto my lap. She sometimes stays there until I leave and have to move her off.
She is so sweet, energetic, and her feathers are gorgeous!
She is too young for eggs, but I can't wait!

Read more about Lizzy on my chicken blog at http://clairesfreeasabird.blogspot.com/ !

Pros: she likes to be held and loved and lays allot.
Cons: not anything i can think of she is sweet and kind.
I believe this would be a great 4h chicken as she is sweet and pretty and is not flighty or nervous.
Pros: docile with people, courious, good forager, not to flighty
Cons: can be mean to other brood members, stingy with food, not very good accepting additions to flock
I started with 20, lost one to at about 1 month, accident, the rest are growing great, 5 of the 20 turned out to be roo's 1 of which is mean to every chick in the pen, 3 are beautifully barred and the 5th one is dark, like a hen, i suspect he may be a Barred Hudson, the hens are kinda bossy also but not too bad, i also run RSL and BA with them, they constantly pick on those as they are a bit younger
Pros: VERY smart, calm, curious, comes when called
Cons: A little bossy
I love my barred rock, Sibil! She is such a joy and is always the first to come running the first to come out the door and the first to discover something!
Just a very smart breed! Great foregers and are very friendly.

I Love these birds!!! These were my first chickens and I'm so happy the were!!!! GET THEM!!!!
Pros: Very protective, alert, interested
Cons: Mean, bossy, destructive
I got two from a lady when they were a few days old, they were my favorite at first. They were very interested in people first, and always ate from my hands. Once they matured they were two mean birds. The larger of the two was a rooster who just snapped one day and started going after my pants while they were free ranging. He got so bad I couldn't go into the coop without him trying to get me. So he found a new home. Then the second of the two was a hen who started crowing and tried to face off with the big guy and it didn't go so well. I ended up with a bloody mess one morning, so we decided to eat the little one before she got herself eaten by the big guy. Turned out it was a girl and not a miss identified boy which we found strange. They both caused plenty of problems but maybe I just was unlucky and got two off the wall birds. Not for me I guess. :/

They did keep everything away from the girls while they were out free ranging, even brave enough to chase a medium size dog off.

They did run the ladies hard though, and tore off a good amount of feathers from a few of them.
Pros: Docile, easily handled, patient with people and other chickens, steady layers, and good meat birds.
Cons: Nothing significant.
When we bought our first chickens back in 2011, we did our research and settled on a few breeds, barred rocks being among them. We bought barred rocks because they were supposed to be docile, calm, and friendly birds, but we ended up with a vicious rooster and a flock of neurotic, bird-brained hens. After we got rid of our first barred rocks, it took us a long time to give the breed another chance, but finally in September of last year, we tried again. We bought four "pullets" that turned out to be more like straight run, and we were more than a little nervous when we realized we had two roosters in our brood! Much to our (pleasant) surprise, however, both of our BR roosters turned out to be sweethearts, and one of the hens is now my favorite bird in the flock--quite a difference from the first batch of BR's that made our lives so miserable! As an added bonus, they're fabulous producers of eggs and meat, though the friendliest rooster was spared the hatchet after my cousin fell in love and adopted him. (Lucky him!)

Sweet Basil, my barred rock hen, likes to fly up onto my arm for a cuddle.

For those interested in buying barred rocks, I strongly recommend finding a reliable source for your chicks. If buying at a store, select chicks who are outgoing and friendly, and avoid chicks that flee in terror at your approach. If buying from a hatchery, look for one with a good reputation for producing friendly birds. This way you should avoid having an experience like our first, and enjoy an experience more like our second.
Pros: An Egg a day
Cons: very noisy, bossy
I have 2 Barred Rocks. They make very loud noise when I get home. Almost as loud as roosters. They are curious. They bully my cat and steal cat food. No weed or seedling plant will survive in my yard! They have very large feet and can run very fast.
Pros: Lays well, was friendly, beautiful feathers
Cons: Low on the pecking order, became aggressive after an injury, too timid
I have a barred rock hen named Beetee in my small flock. She was good for a while, about a year, before the other chickens injured her and we had to separate her for a while. When she was put back she adjusted quickly, but whenever I would try to touch her she would peck my hard. 5+ minutes and a few peck wounds later the chicken would run away. She could be worse though.

We got these birds to introduce our neighbor to chickens. These are the worse birds I have ever had. I won't even allow my children near them. I will never get them again.

Pros: Frinedly,Smart
Cons: a little Skittish
I can't wait for my Barred rock to Start Laying eggs and to see if I get all hens I hope for all hens. I would love to get vote someday .
Pros: lots of eggs meaty lives long
We had a bunch of these like 100 and we sold eggs and made really got profits. We butchered like 3 and ate them and they are really good even at 3 years of age. (there egg production takes a hit then) I kept one and it follows me around like a puppy. (because of that we named it puppy) They always were good to us. The rooster was mean to the other rooster, however because it was attacking the hens... Over all a really good chicken

My Neighbor had them, so it was a natural thing to buy a few off him. He loved them, I enjoyed them and wow what great egg layers!

Had one rooster, he was my #2 out of 3. He cleaned up what #1 was not interested in.
