The Marans, or French, Poule de Marans, is a French breed of chicken from the port town of Marans, in the département of Charente-Maitime, in the Poitou-Charentes region of western France. It was created with the local feral chickens descended from fighting game chickens carried from Indonesia and India. Those original Marandaise fowl were "improved" for the table through crossing with imported Croad Langshans. A favourite at poultry shows, it became a dual purpose breed known both for its extremely dark brown eggs and fine meat qualities.

Marans are generally quiet and docile; but they are quite active, taking well to free ranging in rough terrain and are also tough and disease-resistant. Their gentle temperaments and quiet demeanor makes them ideal for suburban backyard chicken keepers, as well as any assorted farm flock as they rarely bully smaller breeds. Marans are historically a dual-purpose bird, prized not only for their dark eggs but for their table qualities as well. Though the original Marans could also be feather legged birds, British breeders preferred the clean legged version, and thus feathered legged Marans are now mainly found in France. The Australian Poultry Standard recognises both feathered and clean-legged birds, while the Marans Club of America only recognises feather-legged birds.

mystic marans
Pros: very pretty dark brown eggs, friendly
Cons: lays really big eggs, which can cause the hen to become egg bound
I've only had one maran, she was a mystic maran. She was very sweet, laid huge dark brown eggs, had a big build, although not overweight. I don't remember her much because she died a long time ago. I think she probably died because she got egg bound.

Cuckoo Marans
Pros: Dark brown eggs

Not a bully

Very beautiful
Cons: Can go broody (good or bad)

A little skittish

Near bottom of pecking order
I love the cuckoo marans, Kiki. She’s pretty sweet, but a little skittish. Right now she went broody for the first time.
Her eggs are currently my favorite in the basket, though they’re not super dark brown. (Attached picture is of my EE, Australorp, and Marans egg)

Overall, I would recommend. In my experience, can be a little skittish, but I still love Kiki to pieces, even if she doesn’t like to be held.

Pros: Enjoy those dark brown eggs, overall a nice bird
Cons: Not the most productive hens, dark brown is only consistent at the beginning
I really wanted to add dark brown egg layers to my little flock. They are a pretty bird with a fairly even temperament. The first eggs were very dark & they lay quite well. But they didn't have a very long laying spell for a first year chicken. They quit entirely for the winter & are slow to get going in the spring. The dark egg definitely gets lighter & never gets as dark as the 1st summer again... but still darker than the average brown layer. I haven't decided whether to get them again mostly because I find them not terribly productive even at about a year old & that the really dark initial eggs never get that dark again.
Overall.. would recommend trying them for a little colour in your egg basket.

I have a few Australorps and they lay brown eggs, winter is just ending and they laid the whole winter, you could try these breeds. They are really good. They've stayed darker brown the whole time!

Thanks! Yeah, I guess I don't want a black copper because I want to add more variety in the flock. I definitally won't be getting a cuckoo. Wheatens are pretty :) I think I'll probably go with wheatens or blue copper. Although splash is really pretty... ;)

My cuckoo maran is a cute friendly bird. She lays a brown egg 4 times a week and they are big. She's a friendly bird who is a natural leader in the flock. DO BUY AT ANY COST.

we bought 56 egg we hached most of the black marans no others hached, 12 more in haching the 3rd

i have a good hach rate 9/12 and mine were in my mail box for 50 mins shiped from tennessee bought on ebay

"Great layer but at the time you really couldn't do anything with them except eat the eggs"
Um, isn't eating the eggs the reason to get chickens? It is for us :)

Actually my family and I dont eat our chickens eggs. We incubate every one of the eggs, never have we eaten one of their eggs. Everyone uses chickens for different reasons.

My daughter is a vegetarian, and of course thinks everyone should be, she gets upset if I kill a spider or ant. I don't see us eating any animal we raise, the meat I eat has to come from some animal she will never personally know. Kind of limits what we can do on the farm.

I just got two Marans this weekend. One Blue and one Black. They are so beautiful. This is my first time owning chickens and I can not believe how lovely they are.

My Marans are great! But then there is only one rooster for every 4 hens. You might try culling a rooster or two!

Yes, you need to rehome two of the roosters, I'd advise you keep the one with the best temperament. Even four hens is too little for one rooster - he will just overuse them. You need some more hens, and probably chicken saddles to protect them somewhat from all the rooster 'wear and tear.'

yes, definitely depends on the rooster. We got rid of a couple young roosters with no manners, they would grab the girls by the head and and run after them. Our big boy does his fancy dance and if the don't swoon and squat down he just gives up and they walk away.

I was glad to read your comments on the marans. I wanted some but my friend said nothing but bad stuff about them. I maybe will get some next year if I can find a reputable marans breeder to buy from.

I love the Copper Black Marans. They are beautiful. I have the fertile hatching eggs if anyone is interested. Let me know and I can ship them out. These roosters are just beautiful, they forage very well and do great in the cold weather. The eggs that I have right now have the shine on them. They are very friendly and add beauty to the flock. I am curious what color of egg layer would you get if you mixed with the Ameraucana? Would it be even a darker brown egg? The Copper Black Maran, and the Cuckoo Maran are big chickens and stand pretty tall. I have the Cuckoo Maran and this rooster is beautiful also. (BIG, like the Copper Maran).

Im excited to see the size of the birds when mixed. I have fair sizedAmeraucana hens and the bcm male is only 5 months and bigger than my Ameraucana male thats over one.

if it has been lss than 3 wes since the Marand roo and your girl were together, why don't you incubate some of these eggs? You would get crossbred chicks who would lay lovely eggs.

I thought about doing that but I don't have an incubator...*sniff*sniff* It's on my wishlist for Christmas (and if my bf knows what's good for him lol). I'm thinking about getting a couple more maran chicks from the same lady in hopes of getting another rooster. I also have 2 EE's and want to cross them with the maran to make some olive eggers.
