Pros: Pullet/Hen is good to all others in the flock
Friendly
Great Egg Production
Cons: Cockerel gets meaner over time
Cockerel rough on smaller chickens
We had purchased week old Easter Egger "pullets" (sold as Americauna!) the mid april. They were much more skittish than our like aged White Leghorns or Isa Browns. About 3 months in it became evident that one of the pullets was a cockerel. We decided to keep it anyway.
The Leghorns and Isa Browns were laying at 16/17 weeks, and our skittish EE pullet got bullied by the Isa Browns for 3 months until she finally laid a pink egg. It was worth it. She became calmer and friendlier overnight, ascended the pecking order right away, and lays 7 large eggs in 8 days, like clockwork 4on 1off 3on 1off. Cold Hardy and doesn't effect her productivity.
As for the cockerel, we kept him and he mostly had been doing a great job as far as warning and protection to the flock. I also notice every egg I get is fertile. But, his first problem, as a young cockerel, ripped a leghorns crown mounting her. The leghorns hate him, and he is persistent and doesn't give up, no dance and not gentile. His last problem, at 9 months, he is getting aggressive with the family. I have a few 3 week old easter egger cockerels, 1 will be ready to replace him.
I have a wide variety of breeds in my flock. The oldest are my 5 Easter Egger gals. They're hardy, handle extreme heat AND cold, lay faithfully, forage well, and are very calm. Two of them are the bosses of the entire flock, but they don't bully any of my less assertive breeds like my Polish and Cochin.
Pros: Clucks rarely, lays good, friendly toward me and other chickens
Cons: NONE
I have had Easter Eggers for 3 years and by far they are awesome. I love the pattern that is in mine's fur, and they are pretty to look at. I highly recommend Easter Eggers.
I love my easter egger so much! She is the friendliest of my entire flock, jumps on my shoulders and lap while I am in the backyard, and squawks like a pro to let me know she's laying an egg. She is also the top of the pecking order and sort of a protector of our flock. I love this breed.
We have 2 Easter Eggers who are rather small for 21 weeks old, but perhaps that makes them more cute and lovable. One has always been skittish despite handling since she was tiny, but they all have their own little personalities! They have the cutest beards and are pretty curious and quiet little birds. They'd make a great addition to any backyard flock.
I got 5 chicks in the spring and the EEs have been laying for about a month now (they're 27 weeks old). They are already consistent layers of beautiful blue-green eggs. I'm getting 5-6 per week for each pullet. One is quite friendly but the other is very skittery, although she always comes to talk to me. I love them both and they're quite the characters. Beautiful birds too!
Cons: Many different egg colors and you never know what you're going to get till they're old enough to lay, and I might just be my flock but they're very broody in my case..
Easter Eggers are my favorite breed and my love I have 10 of them they're loving friendly docile Birds. My first girl Hawk so far has hatched out and raised 15 chicks! I love this "Breed" they are the mutts of the chicken world and always lovely looking! <3 when my EEs are not Mothering Chicks i get eggs every day for 5days then they seem to skip one day
Pros: Super friendly. Great with bantams. Love socialization. Beautiful colors.
Cons: Hmmmm.... NONE!
Easter Eggers are so sweet! My 4 EEs love to hop up on my lap, head, shoulder, or any other place they can get to. They also do great with my one Silkie. They treat her nicely and don't peck her. They also have super pretty coloring. Each EE is different! You CAN NOT go wrong with an EE!
so I got 5 hens last year, and they are very fun birds, but the cons, kind of even out the scale to a little above average. They are fun especially with kids, because it becomes a fun guessing game to see what the chicks will look like and what they will lay when they are older. They are on the smarter side of the bird scale, and are fast. My one hen has out run a hawk that was trying to eat her. On the con side of that, they are impossible to catch. They can duck while running, go airborn without notice, and they just never get cornered. My one EE, Speedy Chicken, went broody all summer and simply would not accept the no chick rule.
i loved watching my groups fuz change to beautiful feathering/ markings. i love their sweet gentle nature. Reason i didnt give 5 star is this is my third group and i have lost two of them so far this year to mystery deaths i will be buying more next year regardless!
My EE is by far my favorite bird in the flock. They are extremely friendly, and get along great with my other chickens. One of the best things about them is you never know what color they'll be (if you get them as chicks.) Overall a fantastic bird, EEs are great layers (beautiful eggs,) and make a great pet!
Cons: Not steady in laying, seem fairly quick to wind down... but the personality wins!
"Easter Egger" seems to include a lot of variability in the breed... we got 3, and all 3 look different. However, they all have very sweet and calm temperaments, and lay eggs that range from olive green to blue-green. Very pretty! They've never been the most productive birds in our flock, and at 3 ours are definitely winding down, but we can't bear to part with them as they are just such mellow girls.
