Silkie

I've had nice experiences with them. They look and feel great. Sometimes, if you want them to see properly you'll have to trim the "tophat" feathers from around their eyes. They have funny voices! With one of my silkies she's sort of mental, we call her Airhead. She waddles, gets lost really easy, and she "cries" for her rooster (bawking). Also, they get insanely broody easy. My other silkie hen sat on a nest, hatched bits, we took it to put with our other just-bought ones, she went right back, and we couldn't get her off for a month or two until she finally gave up after us tossing her out of the coop during the day. She was very stubborn!

I got my cockerel when he was 1 day old. He is now 4 months old. I love watching him walk around with his EE and barnyard bantam friends that he was brooded with. I will be getting him a Silkie girlfriend so he won't be lonely when his other friends fly up to somewhere he can't get to. I'd have a whole flock of Silkies if I weren't wanting lots of eggs.

Silkies were given to us for free, a male and a female. We just let her hatch her first brood of eggs, and 7 out of 7 hatched.

I have 4 white silkies and I usually get 2-4 eggs every day. I love this breed and would love to find more, as they are hard to find on Vancouver island!

I've had silkie hens before, but in March a neighbor tossed FOUR splash silkie roosters over my fence. As if I wouldn't notice that there were four extra chickens in the yard. My lady brain isn't that bad at math. The roosters fought with each other, crowed constantly, and bullied my hens. Three of them went in the soup pot, one is still behaving himself in the yard.

Generally, I love having silkies around. They're great with children, non-destructive in the yard, fairly tidy, and tolerant. It's hard not to pick them up and squeeze them all the time. They're not very hardy - they get too hot and they get too cold and they always seem to get sick first. But I suppose that's what I get for having fancy frou frou chickens.

The silkie chicken is a great family pet. They are a great broody hen too. I have 5 little buff silkies and they are just adorable! They are my favorite chickens in the flock because they are so lovable. Possibly the fluffiest chickens in the world!

I just got a 2 week old black today and I love him/her! She is very sweet and as soon as I put her in with my original birds, she ran right to them and was not afraid of them. She is so bold! They are twice the size of her too. Very calm and quiet. Again, I love her!

Silkies are probably by far my favorite pet chickens. Right now we only have one splash hen, but we've had several over the years and they have such a nice personality. Very good family chicken, not to mention their fun to look at.

Cute,fluffy and I have a very docile strain, so far, just babies...but they act very brave and bold and often try to boldly walk out of their cage. They are easy to approach and calm down quickly when you handle them.I can see why some people a long time go used to believe they were rabbit and chicken crosses!

I was given A Silkie about oh, 7 or so months ago, it came with a buddy but it died about 2, or 3 days latter. The surviving Silkie was named Diamond, she lived a nice long six months.

Now, on the pure fact that silkies have crest, they dont do well out in ran, they run into fence poles, and unless you are gifted you cant really get them in the coop, the whole family tried to get them in the coop. after a while we sadly lost her to a dog when she barely turned 6 months old

they are GREAT pets, but not the smartest birds in the world.

I have only had chickens for a few months but I am so interested in this breed of chicken. I would love to add a few to my backyard flock. Does anyone know where I could purchase some chicks in the central Michigan area?

All the silkies that i have are super friendly. The only problem that i have is the rooster chase everything including ducks at turkeys and try to mate with them

Silkies can be such great pets. I had two when I was a child, and I had such a fond memory of them that I just got two for my two year old daughter. They love to just eat out of your hand, and get lots of lap time! These really are such sweet chickens, and great to have around children. The only con I could possibly think of is that they don't have high egg production, and their eggs are quite small. Then again, if a egg layer is what you are looking for then look at a different breed.

can you eat "silkies" eggs? I have two and they are young so I do not know their sex but I was told that their eggs are not good? thoughts and ANY advice would be much appreciated!! Thank you!!

Got hatching eggs from auction. got 36 eggs for $6. 28 hatched. there so cute.

We have a splash and a buff Silkie and LOVE them! They are adorable puff balls and comical in appearance with the pig poof on top of their head. They have beautiful dark eyes, when you can see them through the fluff. They have raised 2 different groups of chicks for me. When the chicks are getting too big for the brooder, I put the little chicks with them at night and they instantly adopt them and care for them for weeks! Silkies sleep together on the floor in nest boxes, they dont perch or navigate ramps very well. Sweetest chickens ever, but will put others in their place if needed because they are at the top of the pecking order here, maybe because we got them first so they are the oldest chickens in the bunch. They are usually very quiet and such a joy!
