I have never had a lame chicken before. I found my chicken with this sore today. I washed it off and put antibiotic ointment on it with a bandage. Did I do the right thing? I plan on changing the bandage again tomorrow. Should I be doing anything else ? TY for your assistance. patti
My first coop was a 6x8 dog kennel with 4 chickens. We took the back and built a box 4ft tall 18 inches wide and hinged lid. Cut a little door in it and put a trap 2ft high on the side of the pen to cut down wind. . Our kennel had a roof . I fell in love with chickens and got 20 more so they...
I want to get some EE chicks this year I notice that they are small chickens. I have 16 hens being a mix of RIR and RB do you think they would do well in a flock of this nature. I would not put them with the other birds until they are 20 weeks old.
Check your sick peeps bottom. wipe it off with a baby wipe or warm cloth. It may have pasty butt. I covered the top of the box with a piece of cloth but you need to be sure your heat lamp does not get near it and start a fire. I think if you use plywood it may get too hot for the peeps,
My coop was attacked by a skunk and it kill 3 of my young pullets. They were 12 weeks old. I had a terrible time getting them to go back into the coop at night. They would fly up into the low hanging trees and I would have to gather them up. We got the skunk but it took almost a month before...

I free range my chickens so when I add my 15 new pullets to the 4 grown hens I just let them out all together at night. I did put the grown hens in their old hen house for a week at night than I just moved all the food containers and waters to the new big hen house and moved everyone in...

My nesting boxes have a bar that you can put up to keep the chickens out of the boxes. I have read that people throw a towel or blanket over the nesting boxes for a few nights to the chicken learn not to sleep in them,
I use to use pine shavings. Had someone give me some straw so I used that last winter BIG mistake.. I got mites and lice for the first time. So if you use straw be sure it is not old and been stored in someone's barn. I now use wood mulch. We get free wood mulch from a local tree trimmer and my...
That seems like a lot of feed. I have 15 hens and I use one bag of feed in two weeks. My hens free range at least 8 hours each day. I think you may be over feeding your chickens and than when they feed range they are not hungry. What kind of feeder are you using? I like a hanging feeder I found...
I free range my chickens about 8 hours a day fall and winter,. I worry because when free ranging they eat so little of their feed. I keep a feeder hanging outside . It is a 7lb feeder I only keep about 2/1/2 lbs of feed in it and fill it maybe 2xs a week. I have 15 chickens. I give them 2 cups...
I have 12 who I am waiting on . I have a mix of RIR, RB's and one white one that I don't know what it is. They are 20 weeks today. My last bunch of chicks which was 5 years ago started laying around 22-25 weeks. It was mid Oct when they started and they never missed a day of laying for 8...
I got my chickens as 2 day old peeps. 20 of them lost only one in shipping. Seems a lot less stressful that having eggs shipped. Hope the lady can set you up. My girls are the highlight of my day. I pull up in the drive from work and they are all sitting at the gate waiting for me to let them...
I have two that I like. Both are store bought. The Frist is the metal water that you twist off the top and fill putting the top back on and sliding it secure. It has a reservoir that holds the water. I just sit it on top of a 3 gal bucket turned upside down so they do not get dirt in the water...
