Thank you for that article. The coop is dry but I think she sat on the edge of a metal water bowl and her toes may have gone in the water. I only use that watering system when it is too cold for them to go outside for their water.
One of my hens has two discolored toes on one foot. She does put weight on it but often is standing on one foot. The toes do not have open sores. They are just greyish. Should I spray some hydrogel on them or leave her alone. I don’t want to make it worse.
My dog and I sit out in the yard for about an hour every day around 11AM. It gives me a chance to read the paper and my phone while at the same time letting my 6 chickens have free range time. I get them back by calling to them cause they know there will be a few crusts of bread when they come back.
I place smooth boards under the roost every night. In the morning I remove them and scrape the poop into my compost bin. They poop at night mostly. This keeps the coop dry. I sprinkle diatomecious earth on the floor of the coop and nest boxes to keep mights at bay. I top it off with the large...
After just 3 doses of the monistat 3, my hen was eating and drinking again. Her hawk wound has healed and some new feathers are coming in. Her eye on that side is back to normal. I thought she had lost it. The new problem was that the flock did not want her back. It took about 3 days of letting...
She started eating some water, grain, seeds and egg yolk today. I have massaged her crop several times and even brought her outside on the porch in the sun for a few minutes ( got up to 40 degrees). She has definitely improved.
She appears to have more energy this morning and drank water from a dish when coaxed. She even nibbled on some softened crumbles. I think the monistat 3 and massaging her crop is helping. I gave another dose this morning.
Thank you. I will try to massage her crop in the morning. Im trying the monistat 3 suppositories cut in thirds that someone recommended.I just gave her one dose tonight with a little water. I dont think it will hurt because it has mineral oil in it. It may help her. I will keep trying to get her...
After reading up on sour crop, you have me thinking this may be the problem. I'm less worried about her wound than I am about not eating or drinking. 3 or 4 days after the hawk attack she was drinking water and nibbling on crumbles when I held them up to her. But for the past three days her...
Thank you for your advice. She would not eat the chopped boiled egg. I am just putting a teaspoon of crumbles in a lot of water to get her to eat something. That may work since she is just drinking water. I will still hot pack it as she doesnt seem to mind it. I will just use ointment and stop...
About a week ago I chased a hawk off one of my hens. It had ripped off skin and feathers along one side of her head. I have her in the house and have been nursing her back to health. I didn't touch the wound until 2 days ago other than to squeeze some neosporin on it. Since then I have put hot...
