I wanted to post an update on how my light brahmas from Murray McMurray feathered out. They were hatched July 6th.
All three of my pullets were well-feathered by 4 weeks.
The cockeral is another story He's still not feathered out all the way and is about the most homely looking thing around.
Could a pullet develop a pinkish comb at under 4 weeks?
I thought I had my chicks pegged for sex. I ordered 3 pullets and one cockeral. All suspected pullets are already feathering well out with wing, tail, leg, and feet feathers. All are close in development, except Big Bertha who is the...
At almost three weeks old the rooster still looks like a giant fuzzy chick. No tail what so ever and very little wing development. All 15 of my other chicks can now flutter and glide a little. Not him. He just has to run to keep up, haha!
Meanwhile, the pullets are starting to get some white :)
My 4 light brahma chicks arrived. I ordered 3 pullets and a rooster. I think I can tell them apart already at almost almost 2 weeks old. 3 have darker down and well developed feathering. I am assuming they are pullets. One has lighter down and far less developed feathering. I am assuming he is...
That's awesome! People used to be afraid of ours when I'd tell them her breed. They'd say,"aren't you afraid she'll bite your arm off being part pit bull?" And I would say "yea, but she's also part lab so she'll bring it right back". Now she's just old and fat and not nearly as imposing :)
This is so cute, I love it! I have 3 dogs and out of all of them, my little Jack Russell terrier is the most gentle and interested in my chicks. He's always watching them, sniffing them, checking on them when one sounds distressed, and will lick them. My old pit lab mix couldn't care less and my...
That's such a good idea to get all different kinds. I went with light brahmas because of the hot humid weather down here in south east louisiana. I've noticed that my darker birds always had a bit more difficult time staying cool. I got a few other breeds as well, mostly buff orps for my little...
Oh that's great! I've got 4 coming from a hatchery in July. I can't wait. I should have gotten more. But if these work out I will definitely get more. Is she your only Brahma?
Thank you for the great information. I work with dogs and can read them like a book, triggers, escalating stress signals, calming signals, and all. But I don't know all the little things that can lead to an attack from a rooster.
Ok, one more question. I know that with some roosters, sudden movements or weird body language can set them off. With a "good" rooster, would certain movements or body language be anything that I would have to worry about? My last roo would charge when I turned my back or moved toward him? Just...
Great advice. If these don't work out, I'll see who is local to me that may have some less reactive stock that they are willing to part with. I'll take a lazy or neutral roo of any breed over an aggressive one of my favorite breeds any day!
...that it won't backfire and result in me being flogged by a gang of people-hating roosters.
I'm also going to handle the boys less than I did that **** Pecker Roo. (that was his name). He was an easter chic, and was probably over indulged in handling and became a little too comfortable...
Oh they're so lovely! Thank you so much for sharing!! I'm a little worried, I ordered a few Roos with my next shipment. I hope I have better luck with at least one of the three that I'm getting than I did my last gold sex link. That bird was the devil incarnate, I couldn't even feed them without...
They're so gorgeous! I would not be disappointed at all if my birds look anything like yours what hatchery did you get them from, if you don't mind me asking!
