    Funny eggs!

over the last two days these are a few of the eggs I got!! I thing the HUGE one is going to have a double yolk, but I'm looking forward to seeing what's inside the quail-sized one!! This is one of the reasons I love chickens... you never know what you're gonna find in the nestbox ;)...

    Can you eat soft eggs?

This is probably a really stupid question, but can you eat soft-shelled eggs?? One of my hens laid a soft egg today (no shell). I've only had them twice before, one time it was already broken and the first time I wasn't on BYC so wasn't sure and left it too long and it went bad!! Thanks, Tanith

    Problems with heat

It doesn't usually get very hot round here but it is very warm at the moment. I have noticed a couple of my hens are "panting". Is it anything to worry about? I remember this happened last year, but not as much.. I don't have a fridge or freezer so I can't give them any cool food or anything:/...

broody shaking and stretching legs! is she ok?

Hi one of my hens went broody a while ago, but I think I've managed to break her. But now that she has stopped, she keeps stretching out one of her legs, and also occasionally jumps in the air, flapping her wings .. When stretching her legs out, they kind of shake. Otherwise she is fine...

How do you clean your coop?

I use chopped-straw-like-stuff and I spot clean every few days, but I have to spot clean the nest boxes every morning because one of my hens sleeps in there and I don't want dirty eggs. I clean out all the bedding every one - three months. I used to have to clean it weekly but this cool new...

How old should chicks be to introduce them to broody hen?

Hi I have a broody bantam and I want to introduce a couple of chicks to her. I just wondered how old they would have to be before they wouldn't think of her as mother/she wouldn't take them? Thanks:)

Difference between male and female welsummer chicks?

Hi I'm sure i've heard somewhere that you can tell the difference between male and female welsummer chicks? Is it true or have I just made it up/thinking of something else?! One of my bantams has gone broody and I know someone local who has welsummer bantam chicks and hatching eggs.. but I don't...

A lot of questions.. can anyone answer some of them?

I've read more than ten books about chickens, but each one I've skipped the broody and hatching section because I've never thought I'd do it.. I really don't know anything! So now my bantam hen has gone broody. I don't have a rooster. I was just wondering a few things about it... 1.0 If I got...

    A few silly questions!

Hi, I've just been thinking about keeping a couple of homing pigeons in my yard, and letting them free fly when I'm around (which is most of the time), but I have a few questions about them first, so I know if it is even possible. I feel some of these questions are a bit silly, but I don't know...

    Should I or shouldn't I?

I'm going to an auction tomorrow morning and I have noticed in the catalogue it says there is a belgian barbu d'anvers hen and a silver-laced wyandotte bantam hen for sale. So how can I resist? I have an extra five meters square space in my large fowl run and the coop is plenty big enough. Now...

    Recovery :)

I've posted this in the Emergencies/Diseases/injuries and Cures forum too as I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this... to tell the truth, I'm not quite sure why I'm posting this, I suppose I'm just sharing my relief! One of my hens had Impacted crop and I couldn't get rid of it...

    Recovery :-)

I don't know if this is the right place to put this so I'll put it in the Pictures and Stories as well. But to tell the truth, I'm not quite sure why I'm posting this, I suppose I'm just sharing my relief! One of my hens had Impacted crop and I couldn't get rid of it. The olive oil and...

Please HELP!!!! Problem with crop!!!! Hungry!!!!!!!

Already wrote about this, but no answers:( Let's try again. One of my hen's crop is really hard and she does weird neck movements as if to dislodge the contents. She's eating but very thin, so I don't think anything is actually getting past the crop.... Very worried for her. Otherwise active...

    What are these two?

I got these two girls from an auction, it just stated "2 broodies" but I fell in love with them on first sight, so I bought them. Neither of them have ever become broody, though!! First one lays large blue eggs, is smaller than the rest of my hens and quite flighty. Her name is Daffodil, or...

Funny neck movements. Impacted crop, or what?

One of my hens is doing funny neck movements, keeping her beak open when she does this most of the time, and when I felt her crop it felt very hard but she's eating fine, behaving normally except that she hasn't laid since I noticed the neck movements though this is probably just a...

    Is this feasible?

I am thinking of getting a 2 - 3 bantams, either Dutch Bantams and/or Barbu d'anvers. They are going to be separate from my current large fowl. This probably won't make any sense, and it's difficult to describe, so please say if it doesn't! But I was just wondering how much space they would...

    Solutions needed on dustbathing!

Hi everyone. I am going to be covering my chicken run this week so I won't have a problem about mud, which I have had since we moved to the new house. However, at the moment my hens have a small shelter in their area and the soil under it is nice and dry. I thought they would use the dry soil...

    bullying hen

Hi everyone... Before I moved house and got 2 more hens I had no problems, since then it's been one problem after another... This time I'm asking about a bullying hen. I used to have 3 hens and I just got 2 more recently. I took the introduction slowly, first by keeping the 2 new ones in a...
