I keep my older non laying girls around until they pass on. They just slow way down. Usually appear to be weak in the legs and lay around alot. They don't seem to forage as actively or eat as much or often, but since they aren't making eggs they don't need to eat as much. They will stop using...
Geez! I remember my folkes moving into town and getting a Kelvinator after having an ice box on the farm. It had a tilt out bin in the bottom my Mother used for paper sacks. If I remember right they got the Kelvinator from Sears & Roebuck. Anyway, I do not refrigerate my eggs so that if I get a...
Okay, so getting close to needing feed I went to a local Mom & Pop store owned by a retired farmer out of his barn. He sells Graham feed (feed mill in Terre Haute). The starter having 18% protein was medicated so I got the 17% grower. My chickens are used to the 20% Dumor. Anyway, the meat...
SL Wyandottes. I tried a dozen of them for a couple of years. Good layers with alot of personality, but maybe too much. The most raucus birds I've ever had. And they were very destructive to my yard. Dust bathing in the 3 places I allow wasn't good enough for them. They would choose a nice thick...

OH, y-e-a-h! Having Blue Jays around is great. I put out raw peanuts in the shell for them. And they love the stiped sun flower seeds I put out for the Cardinals.
They have saved my chickens countless times from hawks, the Cooper's Hawk specifically.

I use play sand for the floor in my coop, a 12'x12' storage shed and on the drop boraed under the roosts. I use a scraper to make the sand into a row and use a kitty litter scoop to sift the poop and then sift the poop from the sand on the drop board. Then I just fling the collected...
I buy the 3 feet tall, 2"x3" green vinyl coated welded wire from Lowes and use 4' 3/8" rebar for posts from the concrete dept and fasten with 4" black zip ties from the electrical dept. It has worked real good for us. Easy to set up and take down and blends in with the scenery.
Nope, don't like it! (taking notes and memorizing pictures)
Wouldn't have one on my place! (looking around for possible location)
Too unobtrusive! (what more can I say?)
Tongue in cheek, of course. I thoroughly enjoyed this thread. The kid in me loves this kind of thing. I dream of an...
