    Scaly leg mite treatment

How often and how long should I put Vaseline on their legs? Two have a good case of them and the others look minor. I hope this works. ;-) ETA: I already searched for a while and haven't come up with any specific answer.

Pullet? Roo? Or too early? ;-)

My thoughts are Roo. Wider comb area, no dark spots on the legs, and lighter coloring than the other 2 Barred Rocks I purchased. ;-) I know Tractor Supply isn't always correct in their labeling and that's ok. I was just wondering for fun since the tub said pullets. LOL. ;-)

Sleeping under the coop, not in the coop!

About a week ago, my husband comes in the house and says there is only 5 chickens in the coop. There's supposed to be six, 1 too and 5 ladies. We found her snuggled up in the straw under the coop. (There is a 4x4x2 semi enclosed space under the coop, 2 exits) We left her there that night because...

Ferment + heated bowl = results?

Does anyone feed the fermented feed in a heated bowl for the winter? Does it work well? I was just wondering before I went and spent money. Both the ferment and water freeze within an hour with the subzero temps we've had this week. I've been rotating bowls every couple hours to keep up, but I...

Vent- protecting chickens is a lot of thinking....

Yesterday, we pulled in the drive and while my husband was unloading I went to check on the chickens (free range). As I'm walking to the coop I see movement, that isn't chicken. It's a opossum snooping around the coop. Surprised me since I've never seen one during day light/dusk, only at night...

    How often should I feed?

They have dry pellets available all day. I give them about 2-3 cups of fermented food in the morning and evening, which they finish. The ground is getting too cold for foraging, so they camp out under my porches, waiting for food all day. They won't go back by the coop for the dry stuff at...

    Adding rooster stopped egg laying?

Here's our new boy! He is young and I think still figuring out his role. LOL My husband would like to know, would adding him to our flock of 6 stress out our layers to stop laying? We were getting 3 eggs a day consistently, now we get 2. The second day he was here we didn't get any eggs. It's...

Feeding crushed egg shells for calcium?

How fine do you crush the egg shells? The shells below are baked and I would like to know if they need to be smaller.

    ISA Brown age?

These three ladies haven't started laying yet. According to who we bought them from they should be about 27-30 weeks old. I'm thinking they are way younger than that and I'm going to be waiting till spring. Good thing the other 3 are laying everyday. LOL Here's a close up of one. I'll add more...

10 days post bumble foot surgery

This is what her foot looks like after ten days. The scab is loosening up around the edges and healing nicely. The swelling went down a lot but I have a feeling there's still some pus in there. :-( I've been changing the bandage every 24-48 hours. I have to give it one more week, only...

Neighbor boys caught one of our chickens! I'm not happy.

I notice my husband outside looking at something on the back of our property. I follow his gaze and see a white shirt and a blue shirt through the brush. I open a window ask what's going on and all I hear is something about our chickens. So I rush to get my coat and boots and go out with him...

Bumble foot surgery taken care of this morning. Owned chickens for 5 days total. UGH!

Now I know why I should have waited till spring and just ordered chicks. We picked up 3 Isa browns on Saturday, and 3 production reds on Monday. They all integrated well. The browns were free ranging at their last home and are doing well. The reds were in a run all day and it wasn't cared...

Will the hens try to visit the neighbors rooster?

Will my hens try to visit the neighbors rooster? They live behind us, with about an acre of land between the houses. I hear the rooster, but I'm fairly sure he's in a run over there. I'm just wondering if I need to knock on their door and let them know who the chickens belong to incase they...

First day out of the coop....darn cats

So I've had 3 ladies in the coop since saturday and decided to see how they would do foraging in the yard today. Silly newbie that I am, didn't put the cats in the house first and they scared/chased the ladies off. UGH! One is in the brush out back and the other 2 are keeping warm spots...

Does it matter the breed of hen and rooster when breeding? -newbie question

We are going to have 3 isa browns and 3 red laying hens (not too sure on this breed). Does it matter what kind of rooster we get? We really want to get a Barred rock rooster just because they are beautiful. The chicks are just for our kids to experience everything. (I did a search for...

    Roosters and Cats?

We are going to look at chickens on Saturday. My husband is a bit worried about getting a rooster (Barred Rock is what we'll be looking at) and thinks he might hurt our cats. Now I can't guarantee that the cats won't try to play with or attack the chickens either. So I'm wondering what have...

    Central Michigan (Mt. Pleasant area)

I'm looking for young hens that are laying. This will be our family's first time with chickens and would like a friendly breed. Since, it gets so cold here we don't want to start with chicks this late in the season. We just don't have room in the house for chicks. :-( The coop is built...

Would you get hens using craig$list?

Hi! I'm finishing up building a coop. And looking for hens in my down time. As much fun as it would be to start with chicks, our family has decided that it would probably be better to start with full size chickens this close to winter. We just don't have the room right now to care for chicks...

    Will it work?

The coop we are building has a 4 x 4 floor and has walls 3ft high (roof makes it a bit taller). I'm wonderin if I can add a shelf about 14" up to be able to have 1-2 more chickens. I'll probably put roosts up there? As you can see the nesting box is attached to the side, so that frees up...
