    Sprouts anyone?

I know that some of us grow fodder but does anyone do sprouts? I have been growing fodder but it takes a lot of space so I added sprouts. I can grow a jar of sprouts in three days and they take up lots less space. Right now I'm growing flaxseed, clover and broccoli mix and alfalfa sprouts...

    Egg Color and spots

Over the last few weeks one of my Black Copper Maran's eggs have been getting lighter and lighter. Today the egg is light and spotted. Should I be worried? My girls are 8 months old.

    Bare chest...

One of my hens went broody and and before I figured it out she plucked out her chest feathers. Weeks later it doesn't feel like they are growing back...will they?

Broody hen and week old chicks

So one of my hens just went broody for the second time. The chicks are almost a week old. Is it possible I could sneak them under her and she might adopt them?

    First Dust Bath

I thought I would share our first dust bath. I love them. The hens don't really seem to care about them. I hope that's a good sign of things to come.

First night - 3 days old

As someone suggested I put the babies straight out in the run, in their brooder. The ladies I already have which are 6 months old now have paid them zero attention. There are windows in the front of the brooder where they can see in and they really can't be bothered. I suspended the heat...

    Light in the coop

I probably should have asked sooner but I have a solar led light in the coop that turns on after it goes dark...and runs till the battery dies. Can that mess with the chickens ability to get sleep or will they sleep with the light on? Should I unplug it?

Second wave of chicks on the way from MyPetChicken

Good evening...got the official word that my new batch of babies are on the way. I ordered 2 Blue Easter Eggers, 1 Snowy Easter Egger, 2 Super Blue Egg layer and 4 "exclusive blues and greens" assortment. 4 of them are going to someone else so I will only have 5 to take care of. Got my new...

    Small beetles in Scratch.

Finally getting organized and was putting the chicken scratch in a small metal can...when I did I found it teeming with live tiny beetles. I'm assuming it's ok because they will eat thos

    Coop is 6 months old...

It's been great so far. Only one problem with a predator getting in but it was my fault. I didn't close the door between the chicken yard and the run and a raccoon got in. One of them didn't make it in before the door closed :(. That brought me down to 7 chickens. This weekend I got...

    Grazing box

Built a grazing box today. Had enough scrap lumber I didn't have to go to the store so it was cheap to do. Very happy with how it turned out. I put it out there and filled it with Omega 3 Chicken grass and threw some wild bird seed in for good measure. Not sure what is in that but let me...

Fodder, June bugs and weeds from my bird feeders

Morning all. So a while back I tried out the fodder tower that was discussed and it really never worked well for me. I just couldn't find a good spot for it outside of my home and didn't want it in my house (big ugly wood structure) so I gave up for a time. Well, the chickens have completely...

    Broody Hen...I think

I noticed yesterday (for the first time) on of my hens spend most of the day on the nest. I think she did so the day before as well. This morning she's on the same nest so I suspect she may have been there all night. I don't have a rooster and no plans to have additions at this time so broody...

    My first eggs

Hi all. My girls are now 4.5 months old. I was joking that if they didn't start laying soon I was going to name them after chicken dishes....chicken fajitas, chicken and dumplings, etc. This evening a couple of them didn't make it in the coop before the door closed so I let them in and low...

    Aviary Net

I got ambitious today and put up the 50x50 net I purchased from Amazon. I went with the larger size so I could drape it down over the chain link to block any escape routes the girls have found. I pulled the center up to a high tree limb and attached the remainder to the coop, fence and side of...

20x20 fenced area attached to run....making it safe

Hi...attached to my run is a 20x20 chain link fenced dog run used by the previous owner of the home. I have a door that opens up to it and plan to let the girls out there to forage when they are older. I let them out yesterday while I was out doing some coop maintenance and they loved it but...

    Hard lesson

So when the coop was built the builder left some open spaces that I wasn't aware of. The chicks love to fly to the highest place in the coop to sleep which is a ledge at the top where the roof meets the walls. One night one of them managed to squeeze in a small space and got herself wedged up...

4 weeks old and introducing the nipple water system

So....I put a nipple system into their run and want to switch them to this instead of the tiny little water dishes for chicks...will they figure it out like everything else? I've seen one drink from it. I can't catch the little buggars to show them what it is. They are to fast for my old self!

    I built a new feeder

So today I built a feeder for the chickens. I'm new to woodworking so I have to say I'm pretty proud of myself. This and my fodder tower are the first things I've built without following a plan or a video instruction. Saw a picture of what I wanted and just made it. It's not quite done yet...

    My fodder system diary.

Good morning all....thanks to gatus I was inspired to grow fodder for my 8 lovely ladies. I'm in week two and I thought I would share how things are going. My first thoughts on my fodder rack. Gatus please let me know how to tweak this. 1. The top bucket for water I put holes all over...
