My "cooling station" seems to be a hit.

Just put this together with some stuff I had, They seem to really like it. 2 half gallon milk jugs frozen, change about every 2 hours. Whatever it is, it's better than 103 - 106 degrees

    Inversely Noahic

Well, officially 40 days with NO rain, so I guess we're sort of Noah in reverse. Some South of us, but moving South. Oh, well, the folks down there are parched too. When the girls are out free ranging, most of what they can find looks like hay - I think they would really like some green stuff.

Help, I think I got my first rooster

First a bit of background so no one will have to ask. We have 6 hens just past 3 years old, ave 4 eggs/day. Got them as 3 day olds. They have a large run and free range part time. So I have managing them down pretty well. We have 10 Australorps that are 17 days old. It looks like we might have a...

    Lost my first girl today

Really sad and perplexed. My one Buff Orpington, only a year old. When we let them out this morning, she seemed fine, ran out and started pecking and scratching like normal. About 30 min later I looked and all the girls were huddled around Buffy, who was lying by the fence. I went out and she...

    Anyone know this "weed"?

My girls seem to like it. It grows along with the chickweed, henbit and dandelions.

    Finally! Our first egg.

Found it yesterday over in a secluded corner of the covered run. Small, as expected, but a good solid shell. They are 24 weeks today, so I've been anticipating this for a while. I've noticed someone has been in the nesting boxes "rearranging" so hopefully they will all figure that out soon.

    First day out!

12 days old today, time for recess :) One of the yellow fuzzballs looks to be a Buff Orpington, but still not sure about the other three - any brown egg layers that are white?

    Chicks are here!

Just got my "first ladies". this morning. Really looking to a long and fruitful relationship. I think I got 2 Barred Rocks, maybe 3 RIRs, 4 fluffy yellow ones and the one with racing stripes, which I've already named Danica. I've already learned a lot from this site, but I'm sure I have many...
