    Arthritic chicken? Update-walking like penguin.

I have a black australorp that has been acting strange. It all started back in October when she became exessively broody-wouldn't get up to eat, drink, stretch, anything. Eventually, we broke her broodiness, but by that time, she had lost so much weight. Then, she started walking funny, with her...

    Chicken laid two soft eggs.

I went to check on my chickens before I went to bed and I noticed that one of my Ameraucanas had her tail up high, her bottom down low, and she appeared to be straining. I recognized the eggnlaying position, but she was on the roosting bar, so I wondered if she was constipated or something, if...

    Combining 2 existing coops.

I thought I was offically done adding chickens to my flock until my last hatch left me with 5 super friendly hens. I would love to keep them, but in our current 4x6 coop, 12 chickens is the limit. We still have this 4x6 all in one coop from when we started. Would it be possible to combine them...

Chickens wont start laying after molt

I have 2 black australorps, 2 barred rocks, and 2 ameraucanas that have finished molting months ago, but will not lay. Our golden buffs, rhode island red, and wyandotte bantam are laying almost every day, but the others havn't laid an egg since maybe late september, early october. All chickens...

    Frankenstorm vs. Chickens

Hurricane Sandy, nicknamed Frankenstorm, made its way from Florida up the East Coast yesterday evening. Connecticut is just starting to get those 90 mile and hour winds and heavy rain. My chickens are huddled in a corner of the pen, soaking wet and squaking. We've had storms before, and the...

Newly hatched chick cannot open his/her eyes!

I just finished hatching a brood of 7 chicks very late last night. This afternoon, I noticed that one of the chicks just layed on the ground and slept, even when I accidentally dropped a box and the sound scared the rest of the chicks, this chick just lifted her head and kept her eyes closed. I...

    Baby chick cannibalism?

Just this afternoon, I had noticed that some of my 9 week old babies that are outside in an all-in-one coop had bald, bloody, swollen patches of skin near their tails on their backs. We were not sure what was causing the problem, so we put some noesporin on the wounds and put the 2 chicks back...

    Crazy Psyco Rooster!!!

I previously posted a thread about my roster attacking me becuase i wore a different pair of shoes into the coop. Needless to say i now always wear the same pair of shoes into the pen every day. Today, my dad was attacked by the rooster, so when i went in to take over the cleaning, the rooster...

What do you get when you cross....

I have had an ameraucana rooster mate with barred rock hens, ameraucana hens, golden buff hens, and black australorp hens. I have at least one egg from each of these hens in an incubator with a planned hatch date of the day before memorial day, whatever day that is. What possible chicks should i...

Ameraucana rooster doesn't like my shoes?

I have a 10 month old ameraucana rooster. He is very sweet to the hens, always giving them food and keeping them safe from hawks. Not too long ago, he started attacking my little brothers. Every time they went into the pen, he would put his head down and walk sideways up to them, and then start...

Is this splayed leg or something else?

This chick hatched earlier this morning and a few hours later I noticed that she could not walk or stand. Her legs fold under her sideways, an when she struggles to walk, her left foot reaches over her wing. Is this splayed leg or something worse?

    Wet eggs!

Some water dripped off the lid of the incubator and got a few eggs wet. They are due to hatch tomorrow. I tried to wipe them off as best as i could without moving them. Will this affect the hatch?

    Wet eggs!

Some water from the lid of the incubator dripped onto the eggs. They're supposed to hatch tomorrow. Will the water disrupt the hatch? (Against better judgement, i opened the lid just to gently wipe the eggs off. Tried not to move them, but i wasnt able to get all the water off.)

    What to expect come hatching?

I should seriously win the "Worst Mother of the Year" award! I just went into lockdown yesterday evening (yesterday was day seventeen for me) and things went from bad to worse to absolutely horrible!!!!! So let me give anyone who is willing to read the woes of a poor, stressed chicken mom the...

    When to stop turning?

This is not my first time incubating, but every time I get confused about this. I read somewhere that you have to stop turning the eggs three days before they are expected to hatch. That would be day 18. So would I turn on day 18 and stop on day 19, or would I turn on day 17 and stop on day 18?

    Fried and dried eggs!

When I woke up this morning, the temp in my incubator was 104 and the humidy was 29%. I don't know how long it was like that but I know it started after midnight! Does anyone know if this temp and humidity would have a big effect on the growing embryos? This is only the second day of incubation.

    Too small, too tight!!!

At the moment, we have 13 chickens and 2 coops. One coop is a 4x6 coop with one roosting bar. We added another one going perpendicular to the existing one and currently have 11 chickens squashed inside. The other coop is 3x4. We made it out of a dog house. This small coop holds our two misfits...

Installing a pc fan in a homemade styrofoam incubator

Its that time of year again. The birds are singing, the chicks are hatching, and the frustrated screams of those (like me) who cant get their incubators to function properly can be heard from my house!!!! I bought a well insulated incubator, and got the bulbs, the wire for the eggs to rest on...
